raid517 Posted December 29, 2002 Share Posted December 29, 2002 Hi does anyone know if there's a hack to get Windows Media Player 7.1 working in Windows 95? Not that I'm running Windows 95, I'm running Linux Mandrake 9.0 and Windows XP and I'm trying to get windows media player 7.1 to install in WINE... Windows Media Player 7.1 complains that I'm running the wrong OS version... Specifically WINE seems to make it think its running Windows 95, so what I need is a hack, or a hacked file that will allow Windows media player 7.1 to install on what it thinks is a Windows 95 platform... Come to think of it, Media player 9.0 does more or less the same kind of OS check... I can't imagine that there would be anything all that complex preventing media player 7 - 9x (excluding 8x which was specifically built for XP) from installing on a windows 95 platform - and hence on a Linux/Wine based set up... Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions on how this might be achieved? And as for those who will ask why would I want to do this? After all, his or that Linux media player is way better than WMP anyway... Yes there are many nice applications out there, but Media Player is useful for many things, is very configurable, very easy to use - and with the 9x versions is also downright pretty. Besides I like doing things that are guaranteed to really, really tick MS off. Installing Media Player 7.1 on Linux might, or might not do it... Yup, I have all the crossover stuff, including the paid for plug-in and the full crossover office suite. But although you can install many Windows applications using these plugins, it will only officially support Media player 6x versions - which suck badly. Sooo I thought, what the hey, people once owned Windows 95, when 98/ME came out and people who had 95 must have been ****ed they couldn't use media player 7.1, so possibly somebody made a hack for it to get it working in Windows 95 machines - which would mena that in theory you could also get it running in Wine. As for running media player 9.0, it looks like you could potentially run it straight off a windows partition and use it in Linux, providing you can get/make an exe file that doesn't check the windows version you are using. I thought about replacing the Media Player 9.0 exe on the windows partition with the exe/setup file from media player 7.0 and attempting to run it, but I wasn't sure if that would work - and in any case it still means I have to work out how to get Media player 7.1 to install. Somehow or other I have to fool it into thinking its runn ing on a higher Windows version than 95, (or WINE) or disable its ability to chech the OS version completely.... All suggestions are extremely welcome... :) Q Ps If I don't make any progress here I may consider moving this post to the WinXP section as this is much more populated and is likely to genertate a greater response level, particularly from those who might know a thing or two about this sort of thing... :) So don't be surprised if the thread vanishes in the next hour or two. They last updated it on august. Its likely that someone in the XP forum will have something to say about media player 7.1, or indeed 9.0... As for codeweavers, I'm not sure if that's the way to go. Their last update was a while ago - and they are not allowed to officially use hacks to get MS software working... That is they cannot recommend you use hacked .exes etc... I have seen many hacks on Neowin over the last several months to get various MS appz working, or doing things they shouldn't, so even though this is a bit of a grey area, I thought this would be a good place to ask. To clarify, Crossover must use purely legal means to get their MS appz to run, whereas I personally am not too fussed how I get them working, so long as i can get them to work... :) Having said that, this is still jumping the gun, WMP 9.0 is a distant Linux goal right now, as I would simply be happy with WMP 7.1... At least it makes for a passable WMP version. I already got Internet explorer 6.0 and a whole bunch of other stuff to work too, so WMP is the next target on my list.... I installed Windows Media Player 7.1 simply by replacing the exe with the exe from version 7.0. It works but the graphics are a tad whack, some windows are too big, some are too small, the tabs don't fit properly. It sounds like there is something that deals with the layout that is missing. So seeing as it looks so ugly in Linux, I am now faced with a contrary problem which on this occasion is how to uninstall it... : (As you may be aware there is no control panel in Wine, so the ability to add and remove Windows components does not exist natively. What I need is a utility that will cleanly scrub all traces of Media Player 7.1 from my Wine/Windows 95 registry. I would try the same proceedure with Media Player 9x to see if there is any improvement, but it won't let me until I find a way to completely uninstall Windows Media Player 7.1.. Any ideas?
