Freshly burnt Redhat 8

No - it really doesn't check that the CD has been burnt correctly - but that the ISO file is not corrupt, nor that it has been tampered with. Since you most likely do not have access to a linux box (which would have md5 for you) here is a link to a windows version - http://www.md5summer.org/

You would want to check to make sure that the ISO files were download correctly - before you burn them. So you would check with md5 - also, this can tell you if someone has messed with the files or not.

Think of it as an electronic signature for the file.

I think I need to think a bit before replying

Budman, dosen't the media check in the installer check the CDs?

Yes there is a media checker once you boot the CD - but from a security standpoint - if the ISO was messed with - the signature file for the media could also have been messed with :)

I would highly doubt the files have been messed with - Its more of a check to make sure that LARGE file was downloaded correctly - before you burn it :)

And then the built in media checker when you boot the CD will check to make sure all of the CD's burned correctly - before you start the install.

Would kind of s_ck if you got half way through the install just to find out there is a problem on a CD - and can not finish the install.

As to thinking before replying - this is always a Good Idea. This applies to both Questions and Answers :)
