Is BeOS based on the Linux Kernal ?

Recommended Posts

Hi, Ive just installed BeOS 5 MAX and am just getting to grips with it. What I want to know is, is it based on the Linux kernal at all and is it possible to run Linux Apps.

Also are there any alternative desktops available for BeOS (rather like Gnome & KDE) as the version I have seems very basic and uncustamisable (if that is a word).

Thanks in advance guys.

kernel

BeOS is written from stratch by everything. BeOS is dead, but there have few clone BeOS projects that who want to bring BeOS alive again. One project, I am looking forward to give it a try, it's Blue Eyed OS, which it's based on Linux kernel with BeOS API (rewrite from stratch). www.blueeyedos.com

None of those BeOS clone projects are done, yet.

It's a shame the dumbass US government bitched about browsers instead of BeOS. Microsoft has this deal with dell and the like about only being allowed to install windows. BeOS had offered their OS free to the manufacturers as a dual-boot option to get the barrel rolling but no one accepted because of the MS licencing agreement.
