Apple re-starts browser wars

Recommended Posts

APPLE Computer has staked a claim for the Microsoft-dominated web market, unveiling a browser it says renders pages three times faster than Internet Explorer.

The new standards-based browser, called "Safari", features a minimal interface, Google toolbar and the option to block pop-ups.

Before the announcement, a five-year bundling agreement with Microsoft meant IE was the default browser on new Macs. That deal ended last year.

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said the new browser was built using an open-source rendering engine.

"Some people have a problem with open source, but we think it's great," he told thousands of delegates at the twice-yearly conference.

It's actually based on the KHTML engine. The same engine from the KDE team. It's nice cause it's not bloated like mozilla, but is still very standards compliant (unlike IE :p ).

I'm holding my breath for tabs at some point. It just NEEDS that feature!

yea i used konqueror for a while but no tabs i just couldnt live like that. I bet safari will get tabs pretty quickly, hopefully ckonqueror will (unless it already has?)

edit: i knew it wasnt based off gecko but on khtml iit just looks a lot like phoenix and seems to be going for the lighter browser market.

I've been using Chimera for about 2 months solidly... now safari comes out and it seems about the same speed...

Too bad some sites still don't work unless you have IE... I guess I can't get IE of my dock just yet...

Safari looks like a good "first step", though it still has some issues (due to it being based on the KHTML engine). One of my daily reads had a nice little entry about it here.
