Steve Case quits as AOL Chairman

useless eh. you mean he wasnt the one that started the "internet" revolution. he wasnt the one that spent money on making netscape (gecko engine) the best web rendering engine. you are just lame saying those comments. thats like saying bill gates "RETIREING" (not quitting) MS and saying that he was useless cause he got 80% of his ideas from other companies like aol and apple.

i cant stand when you lamers say that aol should die. its healthy competition for ms and other internet providers and you still have no reason to hate him.

and how is netscape ruined?

I wouldn't call AOL necessarily useless.. they have contributed greatly to the Internet to what it is now.. I'm sure each and everyone of us has used AOL one time or another (especially back in the days of dial-up and no broadband). How else are you going to get online?

And during that time, AOL was a pretty good deal with all the features that they offered (which was considered revolutionary at the time). Also if it wasn't for AOL there wouldn't be any IM, I started to IM with AOL's Instant Message. I don't know where ICQ fits into this, but AIM made it easier for everyone to communicate (AOL members and non-AOL members).

I don't see why everyone hates AOL so much (w/ a vendetta). Is it all the n00b users that AOL has? If so, what do you think is going to happen if AOL goes away? They will flock to Dial-Up and Broadband. Sure I don't like AOL either, but wishing them just die.. that would have still have a major impact on everyone of us..

the only people that think its all newbs are the people that think they are all "l337" cuz they know how to use ie. aol provides much more than a connection to the www. with all of the time online content coming exclusively to aol users that is quite a large chunk of programming that any aol user can use. all of the music first listens, tv show first watches, moviefone firstwatches. its just all these people that still talk in haxor and think they are cool so they say they think aol should die. but if someone was to say they wanted another persons mother to die it is wrong. you should not wish death on anything, especially something that has been said was gonna die for the past 10 years and hasnt. stop wasting your breath and your keystrokes saying you wish aol would die and start typing something productive. like coding or something. im getting tired of hearing it and frankly each person that i see type it, it makes me lose respect for that person cuz it is a lame, pointless thing to do. :x

I used AOL a long time ago. Back during the days when flat monthly fees didn't exist and they charged you by the minute. On top of that, they didn't have a local number for me to use either so I had to pay long distance charges on top of that. Whew the internet was expensive back then for me!

Anyway I don't like AOL/TW for many reasons:

- Their proprietary client that you must use (yeah, there are ways around it now but there didn't used to be

- Their support as members of the RIAA and MPAA

- Their bribing of politicians, for restrictive media laws to curtail freedom (Don't know exactly about the DMCA I should say, not sure whether it was Time Warner themselves and their media holdings)

- Their continuous bombardment of ads and CDs being mailed to me (seems to have stopped lately)

- The signal/noise ratio in their "community" is extremely high on the noise side (I took a look while at my friend's home). Most users are obnoxious (not AOL's fault exactly, but they draw them like flies to crap)

Sure, other companies engage in some of the same practices, and I have equal scorn for them as well. ;)

Here's how much AOL/TW has bribed the politicians (the Republicrats): Link

I use AOL. I hate AOL. The only reason I use this piece of crap is because it's free. I tend to input false random numbers when they ask me for a bank card number (don't worry there are two sets, and no way anyone else could be billed, the odds are a million to one)... but the fact is, every few days they boot me off, which means I "simply" stick the disc in and do it all over again. Well, I don't have much money so it's better this way. Anyways, you would not believe how many steps it takes to reinstall. I have to do this every few days, and if I posted a screen capture walk through of all the ridiculous steps (including having to dial up 3 times!) you'd laugh your ass off at me. Plus the users on AOL are just annoying. First of all, there really needs to be a rule against people under the age of at least 15 being online. Secondly the spam is outrageous... how AOL is considered family friendly with tens of porn emails spamming the inbox each day is beyond me. Every time you enter a chat you get about one automated spam message every ten minutes "Come see my new webpage!" from hotgurlxxx18 . It's awful, just awful.

he is NOT QUITTING. read the article. he will still be in the company. he is just stepping down from his previous chairman position. also, layoffs happen, it is not his fault. he wasnt the ceo of aol since a few years ago. so it 'being his fault' is a dumb remark.

oh, and carbon. that is a criminal offense, and 1. no such activity should be posted here and 2. youre a fool for even doing that. credit card fraud is not something that you can get off of with community service. it usually gets you jailtime. :o dumbass.

It has nothing to do with credit cards. Plus, it's a free trial anyways. Why the hell should I give them my bank number when it's a free trial? It's a hassle cancelling the damn AOL thing when they charge your account.

You have to enter a credit card number (or banka account number) even when you sign up for the trial for only one reason. You have to be at least 18 years old in order to subscribe to an ISP. That is the rule. Having a credit card number verifies that you are 18.

Sheesh. What makes you think that you can subscribe to any other ISP without giving them some method of payment (even if there is a trial period)? If you want to subscribe to an ISP, give them a credit card number. Plain and simple. It confirms that you are 18, and it will also be used for payment, if you choose to continue using the service after the trial period ends.

They don't charge you during the free trial, and if you call before your trial period ends, they will gladly cancel your service for you, and you won't have to pay a penny.
