BroChaos Veteran Posted January 18, 2003 Author Veteran Share Posted January 18, 2003 it's pretty much the most robust, stable, and secure OS you can get. i love linux too, but bsd puts it to shame.
Dazzla Veteran Posted January 19, 2003 Veteran Share Posted January 19, 2003 What's so special about Linux?*(*=...that everyone praises it to sky) I meant it as what incentive is there to install this as opposed to a linux distro.

It's just being work on such as create image, upload and etc. There's no announce in the maillist, which meaning it's not release yet too. Does it run Xwindows? If so, what version of Kde/Gnome, etc does it run?

KDE 2.xx and 3.xx, Gnome 1.xx, 2.0 and 2.2rc1.. I am using Gnome 2.2rc1.. http://www.freebsd.org/gnome/ http://freebsd.kde.org Search for KDE and Gnome in http://www.freshports.org .. Freshports is what show you everything are in the FreeBSD ports already. Yes, it's over 8k apps..

He's been using it for months now as he's said in a previous post. Besides, the developers themselves have probably been running pre-5.0 on their desktops for some time now as other have been. I don't think there's any red flags going up saying *don't use this*. FreeBSD developers only suggest you not use it if you're running an ISP or datacenter. I'm guessing that the SMP and other new goodies haven't been tested yet ( which will NOT affect desktop users ).

I'm guessing that the SMP and other new goodies haven't been tested yet ( which will NOT affect desktop users ). Yup, I have been using 5.0-CURRENT for long time by now with Gnome CVS version (now 2.2rc1).. I must say, it's pretty very stable to use as desktop. Sure, there have very very small issues, but those problems are always got away quick. Such as newer drivers, change something and etc. If you are following -RELEASE branch, then it shouldn't be problem. Because, it only will be update when there's security or some serious bug fixed. As for newbie, very first time to touch *nix.. I probably recommend to use 4.x, because the handbook for 5.x isn't finish. Well, it's not that huge change thought, just small edit and add some more stuff. Once, it's finished then I would recommend newbie to try 5.0 as for desktop or small hobby (no business) personal server. If you are ex-Linux user, then go ahead for FreeBSD 5.0 and should have the common sense to follow the unfinish handbook such as few files are moved to different place and etc. it's really buggy. Where did you get that kind of idea? It's not really buggy.. But, some stuff aren't finishing yet such as SMP and etc for servers. As for desktop, there's really no issue for it, which it's kind of ready (very stable) to use everyday as main desktop.
