hehe, it's a new up-and-coming linux distro.  check www.distrowatch.com for more.

I think I'll give it a try later. I'd try it right now' but, I'm downloading the new mandrake beta2 :D Yoper's supposed to be optimized for 686, so you don't want to put it on your old 486

One thing I will say - they have a nice fat pipe for downloading it :) Let you know in how the install goes

Mandrake 7.1 Beta1 and 2 were very... ****y with my APIC, in that I had to disable it to get Linux to work properly. Also, my RAID would not work.

Yeah - there are a couple of mirrors for RH that have some pipes - not so sure about Rutgers. Not sure if you typo'd or not - but kb is not the same as KB - 400kb would work out to about 50KB/sec - bytes not bits :)

::Downloads happily at 90KB/s:: Nice fatty pipe (US 1Gig download source).

I'm odd and going to install via Virtual PC and give it ago. Its odd I've never heard of this Distro and was just contemplating installing Red Hat 8.0.

A few things that have me concerned is that its one cd. Most distro's are two (I'm not talking source) but then a lot of i386 stuff has been removed, so that may account for it.

And its not #3.. as of 11:19am EST, it was #1 on Distrowatch -- w00t!

And my only other concern - the Yoper icon is fugly :p

Odd. I know in RC2 there were issues with USB keyboards/mice not being initialized or used but that was a mod-issue and/or not having the BIOS give DOS support to those devices. ::been reading the Yoper forum:: I've got a USB keyboard and USB mouse hooked into my ps/2 ports so hopefully it won't cause an issue (iTouch will probably no longer function, but eh. Now I'll have to type 'Neowin.net' instead of hit the favorite button :D )

Other than removal of 'legacy' processor support and supposedly able to use packages from all the other distro's without a hitch.. I've yet to see from their site what I get out of using Yoper instead of Red Hat/Mandrake/SuSe/Lycoris/Jimmy Dean's Sausage Links Distro.

...mmm.. maple syrup sausage links... breakfast time!

Ok - finally got it running. Some kind of issue with not being on hda I think. It saw the drive off of my promise controller hde, and let me create the partitions, etc.. But when it came to booting - NO dice! Moved the drive to hda, and making this post using mozilla 1.2.1 on YOS.

Have to say the install is lacking - no real options, no real progress of where you are at in install, etc.. If you use dhcp - does not ask you for hostname of machine, etc..

From first impressions - the major distros have NOTHING to worry about here. If you like to play with different distros (like I do) then sure take a look. If your a linux newbie - stick with one of the major distros.

I'lll continue to play with it - if I find anything really good/bad I'll post it. But sofar, I think I'll put my RH8 back.

Yoper looks great but Gentoo is the only way to roll. How can you beat portage? Once you go source you will never go back

Yeah, and gotta love building it from scratch so it's suited to your system :D
