i'm using linux firewall, desinged for Linux 2.4. it supports advanced features for both servers and routers such as port forwarding and connection logging, and it's ease to install and configure. here's link

I"m not currently using a firewall software, but i've pretty much got this thing secure. Even if i had a heaping gap, ALL of the attempted attacks i get are from script kiddies trying to use windows hacking software. I have yet to encounter a virus that doesn' spread through outlook, or windows screensavers.

anti-virus software isn't necessary in linux because they aren't too many virus to worry about. But if you are using your linux pc as a mail server for windows clients, it would be a good idea to install AV software to stop viruses from getting to those windows machines.

As far as a firewall goes, do a google search on iptables, and you can learm to build your own firewall script or find a pre-made one.

Yea viruses aren't a problem... as long as you know what you're installing you're all set. I believe there are only 13 linux viruses out there, none of which do any damage unless you give them root access...

It's a good reason never to log in as root, and especially never log in as root and use IRC. Without having root access a virus can do nothing, and a virus run by you has your privelages.

It just needs someone to find a nice privilage escalation exploit, and it wont matter what you log in as.

Well, if you log in as someone with only privaleges to edit ~ directory, and run simple binaries and games i don't believe you'll ever have any problems. The likelyhood of a person actually knowledgable enough and willing to waste time on home linux pc's is none. Unless you **** someone off that is ;) You could also make it even harder and mess with all kinds of configurations.
