linux on laptop

Recommended Posts

i want to install linux on my laptop so that i'll both windows and linux on it, but now the problem is that when i insert the redhat8 cd into the cd rom drive and boot the computer, the cd starts checking the hardware and all that and reaches a point that says "Partition checking: hda_ " and stops there..... i waited and waited and it just does not go on, so, anybody know what's the problem? the shrank the NTFS partition and created a swap and linux ext3 partition using partition magic..........

don't create any partitions with partition magic...just leave the space Unallocated and then let RedHat do it automatically in the setup.

tried that, and it doesn't work as well....

Here is what I did. I installed winxp again and in the beginning when it asks to install the winxp on a partition i wiped everything on the hd and created a partition and left about 5 gbytes free. After the windows installation was complete I used the red hat cd and when it asks for partition to install on, I chose auto detect (something like that). It gave me an error, but I clicked on ignore. After that there was another error, which I ignored. When the installation was done the os booted just fine. I hope this helps.

What kind of laptop? When, you see the boot, try to enter nousb command before the count down to get boot. I installed RedHat 8 on my bro's i1300 Thinkpad laptop.

my laptop is a compaq presario 1500 series and it has a fujitsu 30gig hd....

I had the exact same problem on my Presario 900 laptop, and in all honesty, I just gave up. Although if you do find a solution, i would be grateful to know what it is.

i might give up as well............. if there is no way around it,......i might try other distribution although i love redhat8.... since Suse seems to work on my machine (but the version is too old)... i might try gentoo on it ( if i download the iso later)....maybe mandrake.....

well by the sound of it nodma would, well, turn off DMA :p

Abbreviation of direct memory access, a technique for transferring data from main memory to a device without passing it through the CPU. Computers that have DMA channels can transfer data to and from devices much more quickly than computers without a DMA channel can. This is useful for making quick backups and for real-time applications.

DMA basically is a higher speed mode for IDE drives :)

does that mean that my laptop doesn't have this DMA thing...?

Your welcome.. ;) Yeah, your laptop might not support DMA, something bug in kernel, not support yet, problem with hardware or else. There are few reasons, which you can do the research and poke around if you want to know exactly why. You can add this option in the grub.conf if you need.

Well, the ide=nodma got me a little farther, but once I got into the installer, it wasn't able to access the DVD-Rom drive to access the files. Any suggestions? It does show up in the partition check at startup.

Try to add pci=off too.. If it doesn't work, then add nousb..

Thank you for all the help so far, I have now managed to get it installed, however when i try to boot it, I recieve a Kernel Panic, and it stops.

Any further words of wisdom from the Linux Guru's?

Well, when does it panic? What exactly error messages you are getting? You might need to add nodma and etc in the grub.conf.. You can edit in the grub when you boot, which there has option for you to edit it.

alright, few questions...

1. which kernel are you using?

2. which boot loader are you using (lilo or grub)?

3. the kernel panic message you get?

4. post your boot-loader's conf file if you can (lilo.conf or grub.conf)
