Tomshardware.com tested nVidia's next generation graphic card : GeForce FX :

'After long weeks of impatient waiting, it has finally arrived. NVIDIA has distributed the first GeForceFX cards to the press.

Now, NVIDIA has to prove that it really has what it takes to topple ATI and its successful Radeon 9700 PRO from the throne.

After NVIDIA introduced its new GeForceFX GPU at Comdex in Las Vegas in November, anticipation levels were very high. However, the company was not able to live up to its announced intention to release first samples as early as December. So it's all the more astonishing to see the hectic pace at which NVIDIA has finally launched its cards.

We were given just about three days to test the card - not enough time to test all aspects of the card in full detail, but enough to bring you an extensive overview of the chip's performance'

Who cares how long it takes, as long as the final product is far better then anything ATI puts out at the same time. :D

ATi came out with a card that pretty much seems to equal the Geforce FX months ago. I am pretty disappointed with this. I too was extremely excited when I heard about this card and was expecting to get 22,000 3dmarks with it. just a little disappointed, but now I'm glad I went ahead and gave into getting a 9700.

A further problem is the noise level. The fan produces an incredible racket on par with a vacuum cleaner - there's simply no other way to describe it. You can hear the card even if you're in another room of the house.

Who the heck wants a card that loud

Same here, this looks like a big disappoitment, and possibly bad news for nVidia. This isn't much better than the Rad9700 than the Rad8500 was over the GF3 Ti500, and that increase wasn't enough for ATi to take the crown. Frankly, I doubt this will be enough as it's been a good 5 or 6 months since the Rad9700. ATi probably aren't far from releasing a faster card themselves.

I'd seriously consider selling any nVidia stock I had...

well you waited and the final product is only a little better in certain areas while the 9700 beats it in other areas

how do you feel about that?

I never understood the reasoning on Tom's Hardware and now more than ever I feel the same way. I'm never reading the stuff on their site ever again.

They're saying that the GF FX card is better than the 9700, in fact they call it "the King" in the conclusion and basically tell people that if they want the fastest card its worth the money. The FX is at least going to be 30% more expensive than the 9700, will be in limited quantity and ATI is probably going to have a faster card out by then. So they're suggesting people run out and buy a $450-$500 US card for the 1 to 2% speed improvement they'll see in games w/ no image quality improvement. No one can see the difference between 52.5 and 53.1 frames per second.

yea..i didnt understand that "conclusion" either. i suppose it's the king, but they leave out the word "barely". the way they worded it, it almost comes across as slaughtering the 9700, which it doesn't.

actually they're the same price. $399.99
