Why does VLC take a second or two to pause?

Question

I'm using VLC but I'm starting to get tired of the pause lag. I'm surprised so many people consider this to be the best player with such an annoying problem (albeit insignificant).

So I was wondering, WHY does it lag and why haven't they fixed it yet?

This is just a guess. On my MacBook Pro I changed this setting because I was getting some TV shows I recorded from my PC and it would lag.

Go to Settings/Preferences/Inputs/Access Modules/File ... change the cache setting (check "Advanced" to see it) to something lower. I have it set to 300ms on my PC, and have set it to very high numbers, such as 4000ms for the MBP and the wireless network (where the pause would take more like 4 or 5 seconds).

The default value is 300. I'm not sure if this is your specific problem, but it may help? :)

Maybe they mean for testing files out and stuff, but as a media player, it definitey isn't even close to being usable as your default media player.

I use it alot, but to test video files out befor they are finished downloading, and that's pretty much it.

Well there are some other features that are very useful too, like snapshots and file/stream saving.

Don't get me wrong, it is a very good app, but not something for using as a media player.

I didn't think it was a problem specific to me. I thought VLC's pause-lag was a well-known issue that everybody had.

it is a common problem

people like VLC because it doesn't require codecs and it has a small footprint

there are several things missing from it that keeps it from being a main video player, and you can search this forum and VLC's forum for those
