looks like the WWE Network will be a cable channel in Canada

TORONTO ? Rogers Communications and WWE today announced a historic 10-year broadcast and multimedia agreement, making Rogers the exclusive distributor of WWE?s flagship programming in Canada through 2024. The deal extends WWE?s current programming on Sportsnet 360 and includes the right to distribute WWE Network as a premium linear channel, with a preview beginning August 12.

Rogers will be the exclusive distribution partner of all WWE pay-per-view events throughout Canada and will sponsor an application to the CRTC to bring the popular WWE Network to Canada. Starting August 12, a preview of WWE Network content, including live WWE pay-per-view events, groundbreaking original series, live in-ring action, reality shows and a video-on-demand library, will be available on a subscription basis on Rogers Channel 512. Rogers will offer this WWE Network content preview subscription to all cable, satellite and IPTV providers across Canada.

Fans in Canada will receive more WWE programming than ever before through Rogers' cable and digital assets. Highlights from the new deal also include national rights for Raw, SmackDown and WWE Main Event on Sportsnet 360, Sportsnet NOW and Rogers Anyplace TV.

?This landmark deal is a win-win for WWE fans in Canada,? said Scott Moore, President of NHL & Sportsnet, Rogers. ?The premium WWE content offers our customers more of the programming they want, on any platform of their choosing. We are thrilled to continue our partnership with WWE, and deliver exclusive content to its passionate fan base in Canada for the next decade.?

?We are excited to expand our partnership with Rogers as we look for innovative ways to grow our brand and further the reach of our programming in Canada through their vast distribution channels and marketing platforms,? said Gerrit Meier, WWE Executive Vice President, International. ?The structure of this new agreement demonstrates WWE?s commitment to growing our brand internationally through integrated partnerships as well as the flexibility we have in rolling out WWE Network around the world.?

'preview' is just another way of saying free trial, many cable providers do this for new channels to get people hooked.

Oh I know, but they aren't saying they are going to have the network as an actual channel. They are just previewing it. It does say 'sponsor an application' but we don't know yet if that means as a regular channel or web-based.

They were asked about why they chose to go the new route with Rogers Communications on cable in Canada. Vince said Canadians look at things a bit differently. They're happy with the deal but wouldn't go into terms. Vince called it an offer they couldn't turn down. They do plan on eventually launching an authenticated version of the app in Canada so it has the same look and feel that we have here. Rogers could have advertising on that authenticated app.

So it sounds like it will start as a regular channel in Canada, which is cool but probably means less 'on-demand' type of stuff, but takes away any bandwidth/buffering issues.

Oh no. If Rogers have landed an exclusive deal for the WWE network, that means Sky will get it in the UK.  There were rumors earlier in the year that the deal for the UK distribution was as good as signed with Sky before and I was really hoping it was just nonsense and it would remain platform-agnostic and available over the internet.  Shame :/

Thanks to Chris Vale for sending in the following:

An email has been sent out regarding the price point for the WWE Network when it launches in Canada. The final price point for the actual Network has yet to be revealed, however the price point for the preview, featuring exclusive content, which launches on August 12th, will be $11.99/month.

WWE announced a huge networking deal with Rogers today that will see the WWE Network come to Canada, in conjunction with their shareholders meeting which announced the Network coming to dozens of international countries this August.

In a major update for potential subscribers, the internet-based version of the WWE Network ? the complete version the U.S. has had since February ? is expected to be rolled out at some point in 2015. What Canadians will be getting is closer to what people thought the WWE Network was going to be many years ago; a premium television station. Rogers will be broadcasting the live feed on their network ? including monthly PPV events ? and viewers will have limited access to on-demand content.

yay, a stripped down version of something that will cost more! ... gotta love Rogers Cable /s
