ok, as for dual booting, i read the artical, and i understand all of it except this

The last bit of magic is to make the Linux root partition active and making sure the Windows partition is not active. If you forget this step you will either jump directly into Windows, or you will get an OS not found error as your computer's BIOS will be unable to decide which partition is the active one.

A good Linux for a newb like you and me is RedHat 8.0. And don't worry about dual booting, I have both XP and RH partition on the same drive and everything works fine.

Installing linux dual boot is really quite simple

-resize your primary hard disk and create 3 new partitions (boot <100 MB, root all you want, swap about size of ram)

-stick your distro's cd in and in under 30 minutes you'll have linux up with all kinds of apps, but you will need to fix a few potential issues.

Usually grub or lilo is installed and presents you with an option to whether to boot windows or linux (specific to kernel). You can always edit the default time, default OS. If you wanna wipe it, loads windows cd and boot to dos. type fdisk /mbr and the windows bootloader is back in charge.
