PS3 Update 2.4 Out Now! - Tutorial videos Inside

The "custom soundtrack" functionality still lacks a bit if I'm not mistaken. It seems the game has to support it, which makes no sense at all, the music should be running in background mode, completely isolated from the game itself.

I agree, However before all of this was announced, the services/features that they had intially were very poor.

It is good to see Sony finally step up a gear although they did it far too late that they should of done IMO.

Yeah yeah.

Stop living in the past, this is now.

Sony have received a horrific spanking from media/communities alike for the past year. Now things are finally changing. Be happy! You only just bought your PS3, you haven't waited as long as some of us.

part 2 is out now

I prefer the Achievement point system on Xbox than these trophies. It almost looks like they have copied it in a way.

Right? How else would they incorporate an achievement system without it looking like they have taken the idea from the 360? I had a feeling that some people would post that they prefer the 360's system.

Really makes me wonder why people still own a PS3 if they don't like anything its doing, and the path it's on.

That part of the XMB is accessible I believe regardless of if the title supports access to the rest of it. I may of mis-understood though. We will know soon enough though

You can't help but put a negative slant on it can you? The features were there, they just needed bringing together. As a stand alone, free service is was far from poor. Compared to XBL, it was lacking a few key things.

Really? PSN is still poor as ever with VERY little offering in the store to demo/watch.

They might have been there intially, but look how long it has taken for them to actually bother implementing it. They should of sorted it out before they launched the PS3 honestly.

Because i feel this is what the PS3 should of had at launch makes me have a negative slant on things? Please, this isn't the second coming of god. Xbox360 has had this for nearly 3 years now with Achievements/ingame Dash plus custom soundtracks.

What did you expect Sony to do, just sit there with what they got? (which wasn't much at first) They were going to compete with Xbox, even if they are slighty copying them.

Trophies look great. I love the idea of a leveling up system.

WE KNOW HOW BAD SONY HAVE BEEN.

FFS people stop whining for once. As much as popisdead uk's "sell your PS3" rant every time someone has a complaint does my head in, for once I will actually agree with him and if you're moaning like an old lady in here, with what we've been shown, I really don't know why you continue to invest in your PS3.

This topic/this update has very good news for us PS3 owners, try and not give us a bloody headache even in here, a topic with so much good news and promise.

I don't see the wrong in doubts/little criticisms of how things look, but I really don't know why we have people digging up the past as their main port of call, rather than focusing on "the now" and how these updates will change things.

Reflect on the past, but focus on the now (Y)

ps. I wish I had enough money to afford the Bravias shown in the demonstrations... OMG they look lovely

Pretty impressive feature. As an objective point it doesn't seem so natively implemented as the 360's guide, for example he had to pause GT5P and then open the XMB, the 360 pauses when you open the guide. I guess this is to do with the feature being bolted on after release whereas the 360 had it from release. Equally though, I would imagine autopause on XMB open is something that will be implemented in future games.

XMB seems to have more functionality than the guide for sure. If Sony would just remove HDCP protection when playing games, then the in-game XMB would have removed my last and only objection to buying a PS3.

Yeah we discussed that.

It seems it's up to the developers to choose whether or not the game pauses automatically.

We did, and not all 360 games pause when hitting the guide button.

GTA4 talked about trophies/Home in a magazine preview. So I hope GTA4 has them from the get go. I'm about 40-50% through GTA4 and as long as I can get trophies from there on in, that'll push me to complete it :)

I'll be doing a MGS4 run though as well if it has Trophies. Also playing SSHD :D

I hope flOw has trophies, but I doubt it

It's like being 10 again on Christmas Eve.

Nah, it's like being 10, waking up on Christmas day to find no presents, then being told you have to wait another year till next Christmas to get em! :p

But that belated Christmas has now come! ;)

SCEA PR

New PLAYSTATION?3 System Software Update (v.2.40) to Enhance Community Features

Update Includes XMB Access In-Game for Easier Communication with

Friends and Trophies, a New Ranking and Rewards System for PS3 Gamers

FOSTER CITY, Calif., June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer

Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced details of PLAYSTATION?3

(PS3) system software update 2.40, designed to enhance the way PS3

users play and interact with one another. Through regular firmware updates,

SCEA has the ability to continually deliver new features to PS3 system that

address the needs of its users. Now with the 2.40 update, PS3's community

and in-game experience will be upgraded with new offerings that gamers have

asked for. The update will deliver XMB (XrossMediaBar) access in-game,

enabling PS3 users to connect and communicate with other gamers and utilize

other XMB features seamlessly while playing most games.

In addition to being able to communicate with friends from within a

game, PS3 users will also be able to earn Trophies following the 2.40

update. This new, integrated system enables gamers to tout their

accomplishments via profiles, which also allow users to compare their

skills to other members of the community. Firmware update 2.40 will be

available on July 2.

"Today's PLAYSTATION 3 experience has evolved significantly from what

we debuted at launch, and the 2.40 firmware update will drive the PS3

community experience forward at a time when the platform's momentum is

stronger than ever, with the launches of several recent blockbuster titles

and other exclusive content on the way," said Peter Dille, senior vice

president of marketing and PLAYSTATION Network, SCEA.

"We listen closely to our community, and we're proud to deliver new

features that have been among the most requested -- XMB access in-game and

Trophies. These features provide new ways for the PS3 community to easily

connect, communicate and share gaming experiences with one another in and

out of games."

XMB Access In-Game

XMB access in-game will enable gamers to interact with friends using

messaging, view their friends' online status and profiles (including their

-- all without interrupting the flow of gameplay. By pushing the PS button

on the PS3 controller, the Home menu takes center stage over a game in

progress. Depending on the game, XMB access will either automatically pause

the game or it will continue to run in the background. With these enhanced

communications features further connecting the PLAYSTATION Network

community -- which has more than 9.8 million registered accounts worldwide

as of June 2008 -- the Friends list capacity has doubled to 100 Friends.

Beyond utilizing Friends list features, XMB access in-game will allow

users to sign-in to PLAYSTATION Network, manage PLAYSTATION?Store

downloads, quit a game, and access various options within the Settings

category. PS3 users can also quickly end their game and navigate directly

to other PS3 system features simply by selecting to view content such as

photos or videos stored on the system's hard drive. XMB access in-game

works with most existing PS3 games.

In addition to these enhanced community features, the 2.40 update lays

the groundwork for gamers to customize their individual gaming experience

by accessing the XMB during a game and selecting music stored on their PS3

system's hard drive. Once a music file is played, users can access a

control panel via the XMB that enables them to pause, stop, or repeat the

track; go to a different track; or shuffle. The 2.40 update provides

developers with the tools that will enable them to offer personalized

background music as an option in their games, and the supporting titles are

expected to be announced in the future.

Additionally, the firmware 2.40 update includes Google-powered Internet

search functionality on the XMB, allowing users to input search terms and

be directed to a search results page without having to first open the PS3

Internet browser. PSP?(PlayStation?Portable) system recently added

similar Internet search functionality through a firmware update.

Trophies

Trophies offer a new and innovative way for gamers to showcase their

gaming accomplishments. PS3 users can earn virtual trophies, which will be

viewable on the XMB's Game category under a new Trophy Collection icon, and

will also be touted through individual profiles. These profiles will serve

as virtual representations of PS3 users, allowing them to personalize their

identities and display their gaming accomplishments within the PlayStation

community. Gamers will be ranked on a Level-basis depending on the bronze,

silver, gold, and platinum trophies they earn across all games. They will

also be able to see how much progress they have made toward the next Level,

as well as compare their Trophies to friends.

Super Stardust HD, a PLAYSTATION Network-exclusive released in June

2007, will be the first game to leverage the Trophies system and will offer

a variety of trophies*. The following first-party games are also slated to

offer Trophy support:

-- BUZZ! Quiz TV

-- LittleBigPlanet

-- MotorStorm Pacific Rift

-- NBA 09 - PS3

-- PAIN*

-- PixelJunk Eden

-- Resistance 2

-- SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation

-- Warhawk*

*Requires a game update to be downloaded and installed.

PS3 users can expect to see additional first and third-party games

bringing Trophy support to their feature sets through 2008 and beyond,

providing even greater opportunity to showcase their accomplishments and

compete with friends. SCEA is actively working with developers to ensure

that Trophies are incorporated into new titles in the future.

[qDepending on the game, XMB access will either automatically pause

the game or it will continue to run in the background..

looks great. as an rpg fan, i'm feeling excited about the whole leveling up system. i'm hoping MGS4 will be patched with trophy support as well. i beat the game last week and haven't started my second playthrough yet, so it'll be another reason for me to go through it again. :)

swizzle. Like this news.

Hope to God MGS4 can detect trophies. No way I'm getting the BBE again.

Trophies have to be unlocked from playing through again :(

I guess trophies will be attached to your PSN profile or something? As you can swap save games, I don't think Sony want you loading your friends saves and getting all the trophies.
