Interview at Best Buy

40 posts in this topic

Well I have my interview at Best Buy on Tuesday, and I want to be prepared for it! :)

So what do I wear? What do I take with me? What should I expect question wise?

Is a polo, dress shoes, dress pants good?

Yes. Just relax and be in a good mood.

Some questions like " why do you want to work here " , " have you done this type work before",

Yes that would be fine. I was going to say if you were applying for The Geek Squad to wear a pencil protector and black horn rimmed glasses. :D (joke)

I am planning on applying here as well, as part time job since I am a college student, so if anybody can give us tips or anything else please do.

Typical interview advice...good posture, dress a step above what you would wear to work (dress shirt + black pants + black shoes works fine, tie not really necessary)

Remember first impression is key, so firm handshake, eye contact, smile etc.

Don't wear jeans... even if they are nice... they sent me home and rescheduled... I still got the job, but it was pretty annoying. It's Best Buy... not a "real" job... anyways... most likely you'll have 3 interviews.

The first is just getting basic info... what you want to do, hours you can work etc.... they will ask which dept suit you best...geek squad, computers, home theater, car audio, media, wireless, etc...

The second is pretty much the same as the first... except its with another manager

The third interview (you pretty much got the job by now) is with the GM and its just to make sure you aren't a nutcase... you'll get your drug test stuff and paperwork

I don't work there anymore... but its a ton of fun (when you get hours)... if you can try to get a full time spot (although those usually go to in-house people already there)...

Good Luck

What if I wear a polo instead of a dress shirt? But if it will get me the job, I will wear the dress shirt.

I would think a polo, dress pants and dress shoes is fine. I always bring a pen, a copy of my resume and depending on the job a day planner.

All you have to do is answer the questions truthfully and be sincere. Don't try and impress them with what you think they want to hear, a good interviewer will pick up on that immediately. If you don't get the job make sure you contact the interviewers and ask what you could improve on.

I interviewed for a Geek Squad position about a year ago. I interviewed with the Service Manager, then the GM and they also had me take a test. I am not sure if this is normal practice for all applicants or if it was just for the geek squad position/new store opening. It actually turned out I was offered the job (twice) and turned it down since they screwed me around. The GM told me over the phone that the salary I was looking for was "well within their means" and even though I scored higher on their tech test "then anyone else they have seen that have applied" I was offered quite a bit less after the interviews was done. They ended up calling me back and offering me a "Lead" position for what I was asking but by then I was done with them. Truthfully I didn't really want to work as a Geek Squader anyway.

I was hired on with Geek Squad a few years ago and did my interview in Jeans and a Hoodie while the other guys were in dress clothes... As a matter of fact I've never gone to an interview in anything considered to be proper dress by most people - I've never not gotten the job either.

Honestly, just be yourself. It really doesn't matter what you wear, and if it does, consider the source - do you really want to spend 40 hours a week working for a guy that wouldn't have hired you if you were dressed any more casual?

I heard about the drug tests, what if I tried pot 3-4 months ago? Should I say goodbye?

Just once you should be fine. As long as you didn't make it a habit and you'll pee clean as a whistle. :p

Testing positive for pot on a urine drug test is hard - You have to smoke it on a regular basis.

Well now that I think about it the last time I did it was around June 26th, and before that it was probably 2-3 months prior to that and I did it a couple of times at that time (3x in 2-3 days). Does it make a difference if I didn't smoke alot? Like two to three "tokes" at the most.

I got fast metabolism if that makes any difference. :p

I don't mind hearing both sides of the argument. I'd actually appreciate hearing your opinion on Best Buy. :)

By the way, I heard things about a GM interview, hows that like and what happens after that, well other than the drug test :p?

Honestly I've been working for Best Buy for 4 years in September, and I really don't think it's a bad place to work.

I started off in computer sales part time, to computer sales full time. Then to Geek Squad full time for a while and now I'm a Geek Squad Autotech Senior ( I do the car stereo installs and whatnot, and I'm a step below a Supervisor on the management totem pole ). And it's been a pretty decent job for the most part.

I wish I could give you some info on the interview, but I don't remember mine...haha.

Good luck and enjoy the discount if you get the job! You'll die when you see how much a USB cable cost for you vs. the public once you are an employee...

Don't even get me started with batteries at RadioShack :p

USB cables are bad, but not that bad.

In either case, good luck on your interview!

Good luck and its probably not that bad for a job to build some work experience.

My ongoing issue with Best Buy is the fact that it tends to carry most things people need, albeit, at a higher cost. If I'm looking for something specific, be it a computer part or a cable for a home theater install, Best Buy is the first thing that pops into my mind. Now I'm sure cables and the like, I could find elsewhere such as Target. However, for certain computer parts, there aren't many "Mom & Pop" computer stores around, so its hit or miss with that kind of equipment.

Woot! It went well, and I got the call for my "final interview" with the GM. :D

I guess I should wear the tie to this interview?
