Top iPhone apps you can't live without

Recommended Posts

I am looking to see what top applications you guys on neowin can not live without on your iPhone (2.x firmware only). This can be apps from the AppStore, Cydia, or Installer.

You can give me your top 1, top 3, or top 10, whatever you feel like. For extra credit, tell me why you can't live without your top applications.

Tetris on the app store (Y)

There was an app called Wallpaper app that used to generate user submitted walls that you could grab but I don't see that app on 2.0 :(

Other then that its pretty standard stuff

Fun, fun!!

Top 20 (in no particular order.)

Jaadu THIS IS AMAZING!

Control my computer (Mac or PC) from anywhere, view/edit anything, as if I was sitting right in front of it. The interface is sublime. Works over WiFi and 3G.

SayWho Dialer

Voice-activated dialer. Very accurate. Works like a charm when driving.

Google Mobile App

Voice-activated searches, Maps integration. Accuracy is fairly impressive. Great for finding locations near you. Ask it anything, from unit conversions to math calculations.

Maps

GPS functionality. Hasn't let me down so far

AroundMe

GPS integration, Wiki integration - search for anything in your area, from hospitals to bars, etc. Find places of interest. Can specify distance.

Movies by Flixster

Awesome interface - Maps/GPS inegration. Online ticket ordering, movie reviews via rottentomatoes, etc. Showtimes and theatres shown based on your location. Lovely interface.

Feeds

RSS goodness. Add your own feeds or have the app pick them up automatically. Option to open them in Safari.

Air Sharing

Document viewing/transfer over WiFi. Excellent interface. Drag and Drop functionality.

Calendar

Mobile iCal. Full MobileMe integration. Day/week/month view. Wrosk very well, just like iCal.

OmniFocus

Excellent GTD app - there are many, but this one is very robust. Manage To-Do lists, projects, appointments, using a clean interface.

MobileFiles

View/download all of your iDisk files via a clean interface. Works over 3G.

FlyCast Mobile Broadcast Network

Satellite radio on your iPhone. Pause live, song skipping, lots of functionality with top live radio streams.

iPedia

Mobile Wikipedia. One of the cleanest interfaces for this type of app - doesn't cut anything out. Unique collapsible fields to save space and speed up scrolling.

Tetris

It's Tetris. Plus some cool levels and modes of play.

OpenTable

Find restaurants near you, based on name, available seating, time, etc. Then reserve tables through the app.

Stickies

Use big notes as wallpaper. Very handy, as it's the first thing you see before you unlock your iPhone.

iMergency

Dial emergency contacts/services easily and quickly. Two taps is all it takes. Resides on my iPhone dock.

Traffic CA

Shows road/weather conditions nearly anywhere in Canada. Ties in to traffic cameras. Very useful for the ride to work and home.

Night Camera

Take sharp photos at night or in low light. Uses the accelorometer to trigger the shutter (optional.) Auto shutter delay, etc. Really improves on the iPhone camera software. No more blurry images due to shaky hands.

Audio Notes

Fast voice recording. Tap the app, then tap "New." Save it and add notes and categorize. Clean interface.

There are so many more good ones. It was tough to narrow it down to just 20, but there you have it.

Remote - so I can manage iTunes on my MacBook Pro, which is outputted to Apple TV. It's like Magic!

FaceBook - Any FaceBooker needs this app.

1337pwn - Check out if some of my Xbox Live buddies are online...

Twinkle - Love my tweet action, and it also updates my FaceBook status, too, so much love for Twitter.

Movies - For when me and my girlfriend decide to, on impulse, goto watch a movie, it couldn't be simpler to find a theatre and see what's on, and when...

Byline - A native Google Reader client - My internet, in byte sized chunks (RSS).

I have 6 pages worth of applications, but these are the only ones (outside of those that ship) that I would _REALLY_ miss, if I couldn't have them anymore...

I can't find this app. What is it?
It's an app to customize the home screen icons and wallpaper

I believe that you have to jailbreak your iTouch/iPhone

Yup. After you jailbreak your iPhone, it places Cydia on your iPhone, which works like the appStore, but all the applications are free, and some apps that aren't allowed on the appstore are on Cydia. Winterboard (aka SpringBoard) allows you to change icon themes, wallpaper, sliders, (top screen wifi, edge) icons, appearance, dial buttons, etc etc.

Youtube, or google it (Y)!
