Mom says computer Scrabble game swears

LONDON, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- A British mother says she was shocked to discover a Nintendo's Scrabble 2007 game's computer was choosing to play swear words against her 8-year-old son.

Tonya Carrington says she was mortified when one of the first words the game's computer came up with against her son Ethan was "######," :blink: defining it as an "informal word for female breasts," the British tabloid The Mail on Sunday reported.

But that was only the beginning, as the Scrabble game also elected employ an array of common swear words when tested by Carrington, 36, who is now warning parents to avoid the game.

"I bought it at ASDA in a two-for-$45 deal and the packaging said it was suitable for young children," she told the newspaper. "Scrabble is a game most families have around the house. I got it for Ethan on his DS (game system) to try to improve his vocabulary. But I've banned him from playing it because I don't want him to learn these sorts of words."

A Nintendo spokesman blamed the game's publishers, Ubisoft, for the problem, the Mail reported.

Wow, UPI have totally made her look like the bad guy. The Daily Mail (you know, the real source) also says the game also contains the world "f**kers".

I wouldn't be surprised if contained s**t, either. In all fairness to her, she doesn't want her Eight-year-old son learning those words, which makes her better then the ton of crappy teen mothers out there. Plus, the manual should have clearly stated it has those words - I sincerely doubt the Oxford Dictionary has the word "f*ckers" in there, does it?

Whilst '######' isn't a crisis I would say that having the word 'f*ckers' in there is.

I think the issue here is that the game is rated by PEGI as 3+, however Ubisoft claim that there is a "children's mode" within the game which (obviously) restricts the type of words that come up. The mum claims that it's either not described in the manual or it's not made obvious.

As for whether the Oxford Dictionary contains the word "****ers", it would surprise me if it didn't, after all, a swear word is still a word so it's in the compiler's interests to include it, along with a description (no doubt it's described as slang).

This was news last year too about the same game. They apparently dumbed it down a lot, becuase it used to use more hardcore words like ****, **** and **** etc.

Although you cant see the words i just typed, you get the message :p
