Grand Maester Posted December 9, 2008 Share Posted December 9, 2008 I've been trying to figure out what manufacturers mean when they say that a gpu has so much "dedicated video memory" (RAM). My impression is that it means that the RAM in question is separate from the main system RAM (i.e. the GPU doesn't share it's RAM with the rest of the system), which is what I am looking for. This impression is based on the fact that I've only seen that term used when talking about systems with actual GPUs (rather than integrated graphics), and that they are usually accompanied by a larger number referred to as something like "maximum available memory" (which I take to mean the combined total of the dedicated memory and additional memory shared with the rest of the system). I was pretty sure that was the case but after an hour of looking I hadn't found anything to back it up and I figured one of my fellow neowinians could probably tell me quicker than I was going to find it. So a 2gig laptop with 512mb graphics memory, will only have 1.5gig once the GPU borrows some.
