I've checked all the MP3s I've played with WMP and they're all fine. However, I always disable the option to automatically download details from the internet after I found out that WMP overwrites album art... a very costly mistake.

There's no need to turn this into a Windows vs Mac vs Linux flame-war, let's just focus on the issue at hand.

Brandon, do you know if this issue was fixed in the (official) Beta 1 release that is due or if this was limited to a certain range of builds? I'm thinking it's only an issue if you've used Windows Media Player 12 in those builds...

Unfortunately this is an example of why using leaked builds can be a bad idea...

+1 learned my lesson :p

i used a prebeta version of an OS, and i got what i deserved. It annoys me, and im upset that it happened, and i dont think it should have, but again i was still using prebeta software, so stuff like this can always happen.

i still love my vista, and windows in general, and im sure i'll upgrade to seven once its released.

I just hope this bug does get fixed. :) or has it?

Jeez. It's prerelease software--let this be a lesson. Doesn't have a the slightest relation to other operating systems.

Cleaned.

@bAsKeT cAsE, if you look at the MP3 files that you have now and compare them to the backup copies that you made, do they differ in size? I'm wondering if this only affected the header of the file (which controls the length and such) or if it actually removed the data...

What happens if you try listening to the songs in another player like Winamp?
Can you still seek through the songs (skip through portions of it)?

Even so, WMP has been able to play files for over a decade without corrupting them so why should anyone expect that to change? If true it is a very serious issue, possibly one of the worst to affect a beta. I expect crashes, corrupted installs, even a corrupted partition at a push but certainly I wouldn't expect a passive media player to mutilate files. And yes, I get that it's a beta.

^-- Wait, do you actually have the beta? How did you get to be part of the beta program?

I would think that this sort of thing would be addressed within the context of a beta program.

Have you checked in with your beta contact about this?

QFT, I hope that this isn't the beta build, if so, no thanks.

People can get around this problem by just 'Read Only' the folder so it can't be edited, that's what I do to my Music/Movie directories so nothing messes with them.

I'm interested in this, too. Perhaps someone could upload the corrupted mp3 and the original one and I (or someone else) will check it out?

You are making a lot of assumptions there.

Anyway, I'm sorry that we cannot comment further, but Zach's post above is worth heeding.

I wasn't making any as far as I was aware. WMP hasn't been corrupting files in the past that I am aware of, so that's not an assumption; I clearly stated "if true", so I wasn't assuming that the issue has been verified; that only leaves my last point about being a passive media player - I wasn't saying that WMP was passive but that's how a media player should be. When a media player starts messing with file writes, like WMP does with album art and tags, then it needs to be damn sure it does it right.

Hopefully this is a misunderstanding or it's only corrupting tags and not the actual files but if not it's pretty serious.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326549

Unlike the Read-only attribute for a file, the Read-only attribute for a folder is typically ignored by Windows, Windows components and accessories, and other programs. For example, you can delete, rename, and change a folder with the Read-only attribute by using Windows Explorer.

CRAM THIS INTO YOUR HEADS! this is why its a beta ...

But if your a real beta tester, send in a bug report, thats obviously what your supposed to be doing while using this BETA os on a TEST machine and not your 24/7 rig ...
