That's a bit scary. In that case, setting the read-only flag on the MP3 files themselves should protect them, no?

What happens if you try listening to the songs in another player like Winamp?
Can you still seek through the songs (skip through portions of it)?

i tested various media players when i thought it was a codec problem. Did it with all of them, which is what led me to copy the files to my other devices to see if it did it on there as well.

I actually already replaced alot of them with the backup, but some i have not.
Such as this leona lewis song.

About 2-3 seconds of the beginning of the song are missing.
the original/backup file size is 5,551kb
and the cut up one is 5,524.... btw i should make it clear that i've only noticed the beginnings missing.

I don't have a problem with uploading them so someone could inspect them, but i dont wanna break any rules with copyright etc.

Well, read-only on a folder means nothing really. However, I believe if you try to set the read-only flag on a folder via Explorer, it will ask you if you want to apply the changes to all the files in the folder and sub-folders.

But unfortunately you can still delete the parent folder without any comfirmation about the files. This happens in XP, not sure about Vista or 7even.

Better just put proper permissions to files and folders. (Like I have done )

Wow... glad it wasn't just me and bAsKeT cAsE that had this issue. I'm glad this is only a beta, otherwise I'd be even more upset. With that in mind, I chose to download Windows 7, so I'm fully aware of what could happen.

its not new if you ask me. it happened to me also. when i used the previous build but no idea how it will be in the next beta build. for me if i add a album to the WMP the whole album gets the treat of being cut. i had to re rip a whole album because of this bug...wonder what microsoft is doing while these things are happening

Build 7000, whether leaked or released as beta 1 by Microsoft, should not have such a problem surely?

It may or may not be new but it is certainly worth bringing to people's attention, especially seeing that it has leaked to the internet and is being used by people less knowledgeable of the risks.

Why not? This is what beta testing is about—finding the bugs. Microsoft's end of the deal is to tell you that its prerelease software, and that there are risks involved. There are no clauses that say your data is absolutely safe. I know its a crappy feeling for those of you that this bug is apparently affecting, but the reality is that testers, legit or otherwise, have little recourse..

The only build of win 7 I used was 6801 and I used wmp 12 without this issue at all, perhaps it was introduced in these newer builds?

Same here. Maybe you guys have the feature turned on where it adds album art and other details to your music automatically.

I think I recall when I was using build 6956, WMP12 did skip like 3 seconds, but if I told it to replay the song, it wouldn't skip then. I thought it was an annoying harmless bug that would be fixed by beta 1... I hope this isn't a permanent change to my songs...

This happened to me in 6956, I thought I had a bad burn of music files, but I guess you guys figured it out.

Can we pin point it to which release is doing it? Because 6801 & 6956 where both fine for me. Will be installing 7000 soon.
