I use Itunes and never have any problems.
This thread isn't about iTunes.

Thank God I haven't had this issue, I'd be furious.

As far as I'm concerned, the WMP guys are ****ing ******s. First they make the default action for removing songs from the library, actually delete the files from your HDD, and now this major **** up!

You are playing with peoples property here, please be a bit more considerate.
So sue them. Oh wait, you can't, because you're using an illegally leaked build of a BETA.

So you mean to tell me that it doesn't mean that he's a turtle?

man, I knew I had that wrong...

Anyway, I found one of my files that this happened to.. here's the comparison vs the backup on my external hard drive

For the record, build 7000 has not modified the file size in my testing just now.. but I think we can all take a lesson from this in backing up your files and the dangers of using pre-release software. (legitimately or otherwise)

I wonder if its, related to a problem i seen once in a WMP11 white paper. Suggesting, verifying media size and length. with the online database.

so, if youre songs are longer than the actual, Released CD length. It might be purging the excess. most importantly, if its miss-identifying the songs. Wrong artist/song/cd.

i knew there was talk of it, and theres a good chance this could be it...

i hope it will be Fixed!!!

Maybe ill consider installing it on my linux Box

The problem only happens when you edit metadata on a certain class of MP3 file (a file with a header larger than 16KB). When the new metadata is written, it corrupts the beginning of the file. This can happen either when you edit the metadata from inside WMP or Explorer, or it can happen if you have WMP set to automatically fill in missing metadata using the online service and add the MP3 to your library.

This problem is only present in the recently leaked build.

Thanks for checking into it, Brandon. Basically, don't run the leaked build. Does this mean BTs might get a different build?

Brandon, is this fixed in the official beta?

The official beta isn't out yet. So how would anyone know if it's fixed? (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsseven)

Until it's released, you really won't know if it's a bug in Windows Media Player or something that was inserted into the iso by the uploader.

As Brandon said, that's what happens (occasionally) when you use leaked builds. Wait for the Public Beta. There's a reason why Microsoft doesn't release their betas to everyone right away. They'd rather have their testers get bitten (because they understand that it's a risk they take) rather than have the public in general get bitten.

Have a happy New Year :)
Patrick.

Yea because build 7000 is going to be a lot different than public beta 1..7000..oh yea. They aren't!

How many times do I have to say that users of the public beta won't have to worry about this problem? Whether it's the same build or not isn't the issue.

This is the first time you've said it clearly. Thanks though.

I've posted here about this bug before, It happaned to me on the build 6956, but so far it does not happen on the 7000..

But there is some big bugs still. I'm not happy with the music files "bugs" at all.

It only happens when WMP modifies tags, so if you set it to not automatically update information from the internet and if you playback files through iTunes then you won't have a problem.
