It only happens when WMP modifies tags, so if you set it to not automatically update information from the internet and if you playback files through iTunes then you won't have a problem.

Excellent!

I have a backup just incase too.

So does this affect my music if I only play it in itunes? I'm getting mixed signals from reading.

I didn't have the problem when using winamp so I imagine itunes is fine.

I'm not an expert on the issue so please don't quote me, an official KB article should be available very soon with complete details.

That said, I believe it only impacts files where you change metadata using the Explorer or WMP. However, adding MP3 files to your WMP library can get them automatically changed if you leave the option to "automatically fill in missing media information" enabled and it finds tags or album art to fill in.

The fact is, Microsoft are going to release a patch along with the release of Beta 1. For all those who fell victim to this, it is beta software, and Microsoft doesn't have to release an update until Beta 1 is officially released. Well done everyone, you have fell victim to a problem that could of been avoided if everyone just waited until Beta 1 was released.

this problem is not unique to 7000. i'm running 6956 and it did it to some of my MP3s as well as some WMAs.
i thought it was some kinda weird DRM bug because i clean-installed and didn't backup my licenses. then i found it in some MP3s and i just got depressed.

i can always restore my WMA purchases but how the heck do i re-rip my Aaliyah CD when it's got fungus on it?
time to torrent, i guess.

and as for that statement... i'd like to think that those of us affected have kept those of you who haven't by discovering this 'glitch' before it made its way into the Beta.

Jeez. It's prerelease software--let this be a lesson. Doesn't have a the slightest relation to other operating systems.

Cleaned.

+1 !

People get all act up and yell "I will never use anything past XP/someotheroutdatedos/win2k3". Please, people really don't get the beta-part:p

Shouldn't WMP be playing and not editing media files? I didn't think WMP had any capability beyond that.

Windows Media Player has become an entire media management system starting at version 7.0.

LOL! Good point. Everyone is using an unofficial Beta release and gets all cranky about it. Just too funny!

Yup this happened to me. But ironically it happened over a file share. I didn't install 7 on my main desktop. It was my Media Center box that I just happened to load WMP up on one time randomly, and I used the remote network drive as part of the Music "library" in 7 and it corrupted at least 20gb of my mp3's.

Awesome.

The problem does NOT affect WMA files. Only MP3 files, and only ones with specific characteristics.

The bug was first identified by internal testing, before the leak happened.

Unfortunately this is an example of why using leaked builds can be a bad idea...
This is an example of why using beta builds can be a bad idea.

Also, let's keep in mind that software releases are never truly final. These kinds of bugs can be present in beta releases, official releases, service packs, updates, etc. Software testing is designed to minimize the chance of these kinds of bugs making it to a final release.

Maybe, but I was under the impression that the leaked build was the same as that targeted for the Beta 1 release. I'll believe you when Beta 1 is released and is different than the leaked build.

In any case, it's a good thing that this was discovered prior to the official Beta 1 release so that Microsoft can either:
A) Rebuild the Beta 1 image with a fix
or
B) Have an update ready when Beta 1 is released

Regardless of whose fault it is, whether the release was "official," whether bittorrent users are a bunch of ********, or whether BL would defend MS to no end, nobody wants to get their MP3's chopped up. Be careful out there, kids.

I know people have said it before but anyone who uses a beta of a product, especially a leaked operating system build, and doesn't back-up their files cannot complain when things go wrong, even major things like files becoming edited/corrupted.

This isn't directed at the thread starter, but everyone who is blaming Microsoft and saying "Windows Media Player shouldn't do this", "this is unacceptable", etc.
