One Side of Headphones Won't Work...

Recommended Posts

Within the last few days, i've been having an..unusual problem.

Only one side of my headphones is working (right side)...I tried it on the front panel jack & rear panel.

I know it's not the headphones, because i also use these same ones on my Sidekick LX, and both sides work fine.

Info:

Windows 7 Beta [32-bit], but the problem also occured using Windows Vista & XP on the same machine (Quad Boot)

HP SFF Desktop

I did accidently pull some wires from the motherboard when I was wedging my RC-212 & Wireless card into place, but I thought I replaced them all, would that be something that causes this problem...? It's happening on both headphone inputs though, front and back....integrated audio, btw.

Any more info, just ask...thanks :)

hmm...honestly, despite you saying it's not the headphones, it probably is. This is a VERY common problem that develops with headphones. It's usually caused by pulling the cable out by the cable and not the plug itself. If you move around the cable near the plug and it will work in certain positions, then it's the headphones. Removing the cables in the computer would have messed up the front port, but not the back.

For the front-panel audio ports there are usually some wires going to the motherboard, double check that they are all in the right place. This wouldn't explain why the back ports don't work though. On my motherboard I have the same problem as you the green sound output port on the back is broken and only only the left side works. I actually thought one of my speakers was busted and bought new ones only to find out the new ones didn't work either. My workaround was to assign the line-out to another port instead of the green one. I have a realtek integrated soundcard so I don't know if this is possible for you. Under the Realtek "Sound Effect Manager" in the control panel you can manually assign what is output from each port. For me I just changed the blue port to output the line-out and connected my speaker to that.

As I stated, it's NOT the headphones. I have 3 pairs of headphones, none of them get sound in the left ear, and they all work on my Sidekick LX, regardless of the position of the cable near the plug.

And i'll see if I can remap the ports...thanks.

headphones are cheap dude, I buy 1 about every year.

Decent headphones are not "cheap".

To OP: it seems like a problem with your soundcard them, have you tried plugging anything besides those headphones in?

It isn't a problem with the headphones, but with the sound card. Try pulling the headphone jack out slightly, you'll notice that the other side works. What has occurred *Which is also wrong with mine* seems to be a problem specifically on the card with the front speakers. Some type of short on the portion that distributes sound to the bands on your headphones and/or speakers.

Replace Sound card, you'll be good to go.
