SonicYouthXY Posted April 14, 2003 Share Posted April 14, 2003 Hello. I have a domain I would like to us for my computer. My primary computer will function as a server. It is running now Windows Server 2003. I would like to add 3 more computers, running Windows XP Professional, networking everything together, sharing a fast DSL connection. I have my domain bought, and set up with ZoneEdit for it's DNS. I use DirectUpdate to instantly set up my IP to the domain. (Becasue my DSL is a dynamic IP.) I also have several subdomains set up, each for a specific use: ftp, chat, mp3, etc., and they all resolve to whatever my current IP is: mp3.mydomain.com -- MP3 file sharing though Windows Media Server ftp.mydomain.com -- FTP file sharing chat.mydomain.com -- some chat server mail.mydomain.com -- SMTP and POP3 server I would like to set up FTP, IIS, Windows Media, chat, etc. servers on my Server PC. However, when I set it up, it doesn't resolve to the subdomains. For excample, mp3.mydomain.com/mp3.asx doesn't stream my music files. I have set up Media Server. I am able to view the "Under Construction" page for www.mydomain.com, and mydomain.com Are there any resources where I can look to do this? Thanks! Sonic. Basically, I want to run a network, but most importantly, I want to run some servers: IIS, Windows Media Server, FTP, chat, etc. My PC is named punkass.mydomain.com. I want the web pages to be served up on www.my domain.com, and mydomain.com. I want email on mail.mydomain.com. I want Media Server to serve up content on mp3.mydomain.com. This basically resolves whatever IP I am assigned to my domain. It is on and connected 24/7. Geronimo Posted April 16, 2003 Share Posted April 16, 2003 Have you add the DNS records for the subdomains??? If not no one will know where mail.domain.com or ftp or anhy other subdomains. If you have added the subdomains bust out telnet and try connecting to those ports for each service. telnet mail.domain.com 25 you should get a response back from the mail server, and so on. I need to set each server to listen to the specific all on the subdomain... IE, mail server to listen on mail.mydomain.com, media server to listen on mp3.mydomain.com. Currently, if I enter a subdomain in a web browser, like mail.mydomain.com, i get the home page for my webserver. Sam eis for other subdomains. Any help... Sonic. Why would you put mail.mydomain.com into your web browser? mail.mydomian.com needs to be accessed using a mail client (POP3) ftp.mydomain.com needs to accessed using a FTP client mp3.mydomain.com needs to access using a media player www.mydomain.com needs to be accessed using a web browser each "sub-domain" has a specific way it gets used... but the point made in previous posts is that each "sub-domain" requires an individual DNS record... red8Rain Posted April 18, 2003 Share Posted April 18, 2003 if your DNS is set up correctly, it still take your WEB server to direct mp3.mydomain.com to the correct folder. from what has been said, you never mention any of that information.
