SMTP server question

Recommended Posts

I installed 2003 server and started the SMTP service

I have the following problem: I telnet my server on TCP port 25, and i get the following problem:

(Here is the scenario)

Telnet: test.digital.ru 25

It aswers something like: ESMP Server ready..

I say: helo digital.ru

the server responds: helo [193.x.x.x]

I say: mail from: user@test.digital.ru

server responds: OK

I say: rcpt to: root@mail.digital.ru

server says: cannot relay

Where did I go wrong ? I just want to send e-mail in my own domain....

Thanks a lot.

You say you started the smtp service - but you don't mention doing any type of config on it. Ie what domain to accept mail for, etc.. etc..

I have to admit microsoft has atleast made some effort in trying to not have a wide open server right after setup. Ie in 2003 you have to start www, smtp, ftp etc.. vs just being on once you install. Without out even asking the person installing if they want them or not ;)

Haven't bothered looking at the 2003 smtp stuff yet - but any smtp server should require you to list the domains you will accept mail for, who to relay specific domains too, possible limit of what ip range to except mail from, etc...

ALSO - even though you think you might have it setup to only except mail for you. PLEASE, PLEASE fully understand what you are doing before putting a smtp server on the public net - or next thing you know you will be sending 6 gazillion spam messages!!

Well Windows 2000 Server does install smtp by default, but its ACLs are set to allow no relaying, which is very nearly as good as not installing it at all.

As budman says, you will need to configure the service before it will relay, and yes, badly confugured smtp servers are the main reason that spam is a problem, so please be sensible.

Excellent !!!! Cannot relay... Microsoft have done a good work !!!! Great...

I don't know cause I haven't the 2003 version but I think it's a security rule... you must change it.

umm no, its because of mail server application not disabling it in the first place. I.E sendmail and qmail. Since Exchange 5.5, mail relay are automatically disabled.

ahh no .. you are talking about IIS 6.0 and not 2003 itself. For further reading, head over to mcp magazine and do a search for IIS 6.0 matured.

Err yes, and that is bad configuration, specifcally a lack of it.

If you want to argue pedantics regarding spam, its causes and solutions, you've picked a great target here.

your statement basically states that every mail admin can not configure a safe mail server that prevent spam. My reply was that it isn't the admin fault ... more of a software configuration or better yet, there was a purpose of for open relay to begin with.

Just want to make sure that you are not dissing any mail administrators that's watching.

Ok thats the most retarded comment I've ever read regarding spam.

IT IS the admins fault, you dont connect a server to the inet unless you've secured the services, thats nothing but bad practice.

(btw I edited my last comment because I didnt want to argue, you sounded smart. I've changed my mind now, you dont any more).

Wow, I sounded smart. A comment coming from someone who blame such a flaw on the admin rather then the software.

I guess when there's a security flaw on the OS or application, its the admin fault for not detecting as well correct?
