WM9 Services in 2003 server

Recommended Posts

I don't have windows 2003 but I do have a question regarding the windows media 9 services in it. Maybe it's basic but..

With these services, are you able to use the box to stream music? (along the lines of a radio station I guess) If so, how do you go about it and set it up?

Along those same lines, what are the minimum req's for 2003 server? My gf's old compaq is sitting around doing nothing but its pretty weak on ram and CPU power. if i had to guess i'd say its around a p2 300 with 128mb RAM (if that)

is there any way I could get win2003 installed on that just to use it exclusively as a music streaming box?

PS. hope this is more along the lines of what xstaindx wants to see in this forum lol

first of all, thanks for asking a question actually relating to the "server" part of the OS. ;)

yes, WMS (windows media services) streams asf (same as wma/wmv, just different extension) or mp3 files. for a "radio station" you would want to run a multicast (as opposed to unicast, which is one connection for each person) publishing point. this means that the server is sending out the music constantly. when someone connects to the "station," it just adds their ip to the list of multicast addresses that pick up the signal. play with it for a day and you'll have figured out most of the stuff.

with a machine like that, you could run a broadcast (multicast) publishing point, but i might get some more ram. and you need a fast upload connection to the internet too (of course).

if you disable all services that you don't need and the only server role is a WMS server, it should run fine on that machine.

i think if you go to the microsoft site for windows server 2003 you can get the system requirements.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003...qs/default.mspx

if you just want to run it as a media server (wchich does require IIS 6 and some ASP components) i would think you can get the web edition.

with the other versions, just configure windows server 2003 using the Application Server and Streaming Media Server roles. you can additionally use the DNS Server and Domain Controller roles if you need these servers.

sonic.

WMS does not need iis, though if you want to have users access the station through asx files, they will have to be stored on that server or another one. the asx file(s) point to the WMS server through the MMS or RTSP protocol. and as far as i know, windows server 2003 web edition does NOT have WMS in it. of course, there is always tweaknt...

Win2003 Web does NOT include the streaming software.

Nor does the Windows Media server need IIS installed, or ASP (in fact running IIS on a WM server is not a good idea if you want HTTP streaming)

Spyder, go install the Enterprise Eval, you'll be able to use WMP9 Services.

IIS is only required if you want to do web administration to the WMP9 Service configuration from a remote location.

For WMS

Component Requirement / Recommendation

Operating system Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition or Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition

Processor 233 megahertz (MHz) 550 MHz or higher

Memory 256 megabytes (MB) of RAM 1 gigabyte (GB) of RAM or higher

Network interface card Ethernet card and Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Same

Free hard disk space 21 MB (6 MB for system files and 15 MB for installation); adequate disk space for content storage 21 MB (6 MB for system files and 15 MB for installation); 500 MB for content storage

IIS is only required if you want to do web administration to the WMP9 Service configuration from a remote location.

If you're using multicast (which is common) then you need IIS installed. The multicast and advertisement logging agent is an IIS application extension that uses the Wmsiislog.dll to collect information from players. This Wmsiislog.dll is installed in the %systemdrive%\WMPub\Wmiislog folder. If you don't have IIS installed then no logging and advertising can take place. As for Administering Windows Media Services for the web that requires an SSL certificate for secure transmission of data and IIS combined with ASP enabled.
