How can I browse the internet on my TV?

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this but here goes...I would like to be able to browse the internet on my TV. I have a laptop with an HDMI port, but it would be inconvenient for me to use it, having to constantly unplug it etc, I also don?t have room for it by my TV?I just want something that I can push a button and go. I was speaking to a friend about it and he suggested a game console like the Nintendo Wii, he has one and says he easily can browse the internet with it through his TV with a wireless keyboard. I stopped into BestBuy and spoke to a sales associate but he said the Sony Play Station is better than the Wii for this purpose as with the Play Station you have a full browser (?) Not really sure what that means. Anyway is this the only way for me to go or are there any other suggestions? I saw the PlayStation is $400 and don?t want to spend that much, I appreciate any ideas. It has to be something that's small that would sit near my television.

The playstation 3 is probably the best option for this, you could also look into the Apple TV which can be hacked to use Safari HD (http://gizmodo.com/357626/web-browse-on-apple-tv-with-safari-hd-out-now)

Other than that im not entirely sure, from the $ sign im assuming your in america and im not sure what products you may have that we don't here in the UK

The PS3 and Wii both have Opera. I use my Wii to browse occasionally and it works fine. Mewer Flash-based sites like Hulu don't work, though. (I think it's the same issue with the PS3 browser. (The Best Buy guy probably just wanted to sell you the expensive console.) You can also go the AppleTV route, or just connect a video cable from your PC to your TV. :)

I have a similar issue. I would like to use the internet on my TV without use of a laptop.

I have a laptop but it's terrible and I'd rather not involve it. And so rather than buying a new laptop, I'd rather just get my TV internet-compatible and invest in a wireless keyboard and mouse.

I have a good internet connection. Is there a product on the market which I could connect to my TV to tap into our home wifi? A Playstation 3 would be too expensive.

If anyone could help, that would be great.

Apple TV route could work - The Xbox 360 will have Internet Explorer 10 in a couple of months (or you can get it now if you join the free-to-join public BETA), though you'll need Xbox Live Gold for that. But it is the best console based browser I've used.

The upcoming (next month) XBOX360 IE browser is pretty good actually. That's if you'd use the device for other stuff to as you'll need to purchase a gold membership. I guess you're in the states (as you went to a best buy) , i've seen gold subs on offer for $50 for a year so pittance really.

Not only will you get the browser but you'll get a bunch of other entertainment apps as well as a bloody good games console.

I'm sure I speak for us both when I say thank you for the advice, but also that the options seem quite expensive. My basic problem is finance really; I think considering the options I'll probably just buy a new laptop as I'm not a gamer and it would be preferable to buying a new TV.

Thanks everyone for your help though

I use the Wii Internet Channel. But I think I'm gonna be moving to Internet Explorer for the Xbox 360 soon...

EDIT: Also, trust me the Wii Internet Channel is much better than the PS3 browser... I tried both...
