Buendia
Very often chkdsk.exe launches to check system partition even though it had shut down cleanly, by using Shut down opton in the Start menu. I'm running Windows 7 RC X64; I can't remember if it happened with other builds. Roughly, every second startup is affected with this issue. This is my last and before last log: Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS. Volume label is WINDOWS 7. One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. I've tried running chkdsk from Win 7 install disk (from Command Prompt) on all partitions (with /f parameter) but apparently it didn't help. Any ideas? Thanks! kimsland
Do you happen to have ZoneAlarm installed? If so please uninstall it, and test again (a couple of restarts may be required) Or it could just be a bad spot on the hard drive, running a drive diagnostics on it should confirm if the hard drive is faulty or not
Buendia
No, I don't have ZA installed, but I have Avira Premium 2009. I've tried running HD Tune test, and when it reached about 50% my HDD temp was almost 60?C, so I turned off computer to cool down (it's summer, you know:)) )
kimsland
I would suggest you back up any user data on that hard drive, as it may be faulty Once your data is fully backed up, you should then locate the hard drive manufacture diagnostic utility (usually these are used in warranty scenarios, so that's the area you should find the tool on the manuafacturers support page)
limok
You know the same happens to me too on 2 of my machines, I have Avira Free installed also and I'm thinking it may be that.
kimsland
It's definitely not Avira free
Buendia
I'll look for Diagnostic software
kimsland
Actually it could be your power supply as well, but start with the diagnostic test, from the manufacturer
Buendia
I'm just preparing for the test but the HD Tune reports that it's healthy, Data Lifeguard Diagnostic from Western Digital too
Buendia
I ran the test with WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics (quick and extended test) and it did not find any errors :) I've just uninstalled Avira and installed Microsoft Security Essentials, so will see if the problem occurs again. Maybe it could be ntfs.sys driver issue?
dangerouseddy
the ntfs file system could have been set to dirty, that would cause a checkdisk on every boot. under vista you had to reformat the drive to fix it.
jshimmy3
I've had that problem too...also an Avira user. And I've only had the problem on my Windows 7 install, which is on a different physical drive from my Vista SP2. Both drives check out. Buendia
I've uninstalled Avira Premium and installed Avira Free; it's been 6 days since the last error :)
