Look at it this way. The Moment you have can be seen as like a Dell PC. Full of bloatware and with restrictions. Rooting resets your phone, but to more of like a self built pc. You basically set it up as you would like, without any pre-installed software and without any real limitations to what you can do to the OS, depending on the ROM you get.

Putting a custom rom on your phone can be a great thing, but can also hurt it depending on your service, where you live, and the device being rooted. Most root versions require you to get a "radio" which is basically what picks up your cell signal. Some of these roots do not have very good "radio" software and can leave you with less than desirable sound quality during calls. Others may not let you use bluetooth properly, while others work just fine and even give you the ability to OverClock your phone.

Worst description ever of what root does.

All the apps I use can be found on my AppBrain:

http://www.appbrain.com/user/robbiekhan/galaxy-s-ii

My favourite thus far is Thumb Keyboard, it's so versatile and reminds me a lot of the CM7 Gingerbread keyboard with the feature set but goes beyond it with layout customisations like landscape split keyboards and themes and so on!

Some changes, some late new stuff, for anybody who might still look for things

Apps:

Arity Algeo - scientific calc with graphing

Extended Controls Widgetsoid - switcher widgets that actually work on Gingerbread

Rings Extended - I can't believe I've looked over this for so long... ties in with system ringtone changer and many file managers and players, awesomesauce

WidgetLocker - widgets on a lockscreen, what else

Games:

Shredder Chess - the best chess engine, let me tell you... the app is quite expensive for a mobile app, but chess fans will appreciate

I had read here on Neowin within the last one month about an android app using which we can monitor how many devices are using the pc's wifi. I had installed it and found it very useful. But 2 days back I installed a custom ROM and thus lost that app. Now I am unable to recall its name :-( I think it began with 'Open' and second word had something with 'F'. Its icon was like a flower. I have tried searching but havent found it. Do any of you guys remember reading about this app? Can you post its link here or better still any similar app which you guys are using?

Thanks in advance!

PocketCloud (although it has a pro version, free version is quite featured)

https://market.andro...pocketcloudfree

Well, and then there's TeamViewer, for what it's worth.

Thanks for the reply. I was looking for one that didn't require a client application to be installed on the target PC. After trying numerous ones that didn't work, I found Remote RDP Lite. It allowed me to connect via RDP to the PCs on my home network. Even worked with VMs!

I might try that out. I've only tried the 2X client, and it worked very well, but I'm willing to give other apps a try.
