4015 wierd install behavior

Recommended Posts

after I tried to install M5 4015 on my D: drive today...

in the end, it changed the installed partition to drive C: .....

(situation here: it swapped my C: and D: .......)

anyone has encountered this before? this freaking new feature is like a joke...

Yep... happened to me on both M4 and M5... annoying... only it swapped about 4 of my drive letters around, even though I started the install from a previous version of Windows so that it would keep the letters.

I think this is due to the nature of the WinPE (hope it gets fixed...)

it will do that because of the way it's installed. i don't think there's any way around it.

the old versions of windows, when they were installed, took the list of drive letters from windows (the os running when the installer first ran). so if you're running windows from c:\windows, and launch the installer for xp, your "x:" drive will show up as "x:" in the new install. but if you install from dos, or boot from the cd, the "x:" drive will turn to "d:". longhorn's installer basically copies an image of the hard drive to the hard drive, and when you first boot longhorn, it detects all the hard drives and partitions. (afaik) so it detects the drive it's on as "c:" and starts the rest of them at "d:"... that make sense?

It does make sort of sense... but it does it in a weird way... the drive letters aren't ordered according to partition... it's very random.
