How can I tell if laptop dvd-rw drive burns DLs?

Recommended Posts

I got this ASUS P501J-X2 laptop

but the specs don't mention if the dvd burner burns dual layer discs. The model number for the drive is "hl-dt-st dvdram gt30n". I need to know if this drive will write to DLs.

thanks

I don't know whether or not you like Nero, but the InfoTool bundled in it will provide a perfect summary of the drive's capabilities. In other words, it is the CPU-Z of optical drives.

Considering that appears to be a pretty badass laptop, I'd say you can.

The"hl-dt-st dvdram gt30n"means its a Hitachi-LG drive.

Regardless, pop in a DL and run whatever burning software you use and see if it reads it @ 8.5GB.

If it doesnt it wont hurt anything.

Nice lappy though

Hello,

A bit of searching came up with this page on Hitachi-LG Data Storage's (HLDS) web site, which lists a write speed of 6× and a read speed of 8×. It does not, however, list recommended media.
