Nomad_
http://gizmodo.com/5497696/steve-jobs-on-organ-transplant-lists-i-almost-died-waiting When Steve Jobs received his liver transplant, he was considered "the sickest person on the waiting list." Now he's speaking out about the faults in California's current organ donor system which left 400 people dying in wait last year alone: "I was fortunate," he said because he had the ability to fly cross country in the four-hour window needed to transplant a healthy organ. "Last year, 400 other Californians died waiting. I could have died." He called current system "an obscure process" with "no one asking the simple question: Will you donate your organs?" Of his current health, the whippet-thin Jobs told other transplant survivors who attended the Friday news conference, "I'm feeling fine. I almost died. It's been a pretty good last few months." Steve made these remarks during an event announcing the introduction of the United State's first living organ donor registry in California earlier today. Let's hope that changes things for the better. http://www.businessinsider.com/steve-jobs-i-almost-died-2010-
carmatic
He called current system "an obscure process" with "no one asking the simple question: Will you donate your organs?" didnt he put his illness on something like hormones or something? how are people supposed to ask about organs if you actually avoid mentioning organs? Japlabot
I'm sure there are legions of Apple fans that would sacrifice anything to Steve Jobs, and would happily trade their healthy liver for Steve's sick liver so they could die with a bit of Steve Jobs in them. Nicholas-c Veteran Posted March 20, 2010 Veteran Share Posted March 20, 2010 When Steve Jobs received his liver transplant, he was considered "the sickest person on the waiting list." Really? THE SICKEST person... Somehow i really really doubt that :l
AgentGray
As much as this man deserves ridicule (and probably didn't deserve the liver after the decades of admitted drug and alcohol abuse...but whatever...) glad he's on the warpath about organ doners... I mean think of all the people who died as he paid his way to the top of the list. the organ donation system is obscure for a reason... Hospitals like donations, and like having a way of ensuring they get them in very specific circumstances... Leaving room to fudge and "judgement calls" is the name of the game. Don't blame them, btw, it's what they have to do between free-riders and countless malpractice lawsuits.

Billus
I wish there was a way in which I could control who gets my organs if I died. I'd rather give them to a sick poor kid rather than an alcoholic, drug addict or a rich person who pays their way up the list.
Axel
when you get your drivers license instead of opting in for to be a doner it should be mandatory unless you opt out Totally Agree. You don't need your organs when you die so why withhold them. When I die I'd be happy to be ground up for spare parts! It's like a legacy - I'd die but many would live. Uhm, no. Care to elaborate? Argi
I'd argue that it should be neither opt in or opt out but rather a direct question asked of the person. Everyone still has the right to choose what they want to happen to their bodies once they die but by just asking the question then numbers will no doubt go up. I'd rather give them to a sick poor kid rather than an alcoholic, drug addict or a rich person who pays their way up the list. It would be good if you could decide but unfortunately it's not the case. Sure, it could end up in someone bad, but I'd like to think there's a much greater chance that it would end up in someone who deserves a second shot at life. I'm not in the mindset of punishing everyone for the crimes of the few, I'd rather put myself in the position of those people and families who are likely to suffer because one selfish person decided they'd prefer there body to rot 6-feet under as opposed to allow someone to live. I'd personally like to see it go one step further than opt-out. How about those who do opt-out, aren't allowed to receive? Seems fair, right? mollick2
Care to elaborate? I don't know how organ donor programs work in the UK but here in the US they are very invasive once someone dies who is a organ donor. My aunt passed about 2 years ago and was an organ donor. The same night of her passing my uncle received a call regarding her organ donor status asking all kinds of personal questions like "When was the last time your wife engaged in sexual intercourse?" and "When was the last time she engaged in anal sex?". They really need to revise the program in my opinion. Some of the things they ask are a tad too invasive, especially to ask such things the night of passing. No ones getting my organs, im gay and im not allowed to donate blood seems a bit hipocritical for them to want my organs but not my blood, if my blood isnt good enough for donation then neither are my organs, selfish or not thats how i feel. azz0r_wugg
He couldn't just buy one? Why not send an internal memo around Apples HQ asking for donours? If I had billions, or even millions, in the bank I'd do that.

Interesting? You're angry at the system but willing to punish the general population for it? This is not an attack at you at all by the way, I'm simply trying to put some context to the situation for my own benefit. I do agree with your statement though, it does seem like a rather archaic and hypocritical that they would take your organs but not your blood simply because you're gay. I presume the reason is regarding sexually transmitted diseases; but I thought blood was screened for that anyway?

iamwhoiam
Care to elaborate? Sure. It shouldn't be mandatory with an opt-out. It should be voluntarily opt-in. I don't need more bureaucratic bull**** telling me, and I suspect others will agree, what I am and are not going to do.
~WinGz~
Also one thing about having it being mandatory opt-in. There are some religious beliefs where people where it would be violated if they had their organs taken from them. But I do not know how widespread that is. I am an organ donor however and a regular blood donor. I don't need my body when I die so i'll give it up.

zagor
The thing that bothers me about this is that Steve Jobs is again asking for more from people. Instead of trying to put this into a bill, I would like to see him spend his money on informative ads and education about organ donation. I would like to see him donate something of his own (money) to medical research. I think it is time for him to give back to the society. After all, he owes his life to another person. I want him to take an example from Bill Gates. I want him to remember what he said to Bill Gates " you will not be able to take all this money to your grave" I personally do not admire him...I find him extremely selfish and greedy. To me, his efforts (the way he is trying to push this bill) is another example...

"Last year, 400 other Californians died waiting. I could have died." I doubt luck had anything to do with it. I'm pretty sure someone died because of him being bumped over the line.
