Chasethebase Reporter Posted April 9, 2010 Reporter Share Posted April 9, 2010 No you won't. Wrong, you will. You'll just miss out on some of the main features, like multitasking. Just as johndotcom83 said.
Hell-In-A-Handbasket
No you wont get the update in any form on the Apple link i provided, do you see the 1st Gen iPod Touch anywhere on there, let alone at the bottom where they list the 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen but not the 1st Gen, durring the keynote jobs was asked about it, and his response was it was a reason to upgrade Link Apple Site

No, the people saying you won't be able to use it are right. The original iPhone and the first iPod touch are getting phased out in 4.0.

suicide_pact
So if I own a 2nd Gen iPod Touch (32 gigs w/ 4 lines of text on back) and I do get the 4.0 upgrade, what besides multitasking, will I be missing out on? Or better yet, where can I find a breakdown of this information? I've searched but so far have not found great results.

It could possibly be just Multitasking, i'm not too sure but I hope so. As long as I have all the features they showed and the backgrounds on the homescreen i'll be happy
suicide_pact
Remember for the big version updates iPod Touch owners have to pay a couple of dollars for the update that has the features (not so for an stripped down update that only has security updates, etc.) So for 2nd gen. owners like myself, this update might not be worth it. You might change your mind once you see apps you want requiring the 4.0 firmware. I, for one, I'm not surprised that support for the 1st gen iPhone and iPod touch has been dropped. It's 3-year-old hardware after all. Plus I think there will be a workaround later on, after all that's what hackers do.

Chasethebase Reporter Posted May 6, 2010 Reporter Share Posted May 6, 2010 I could have sworn when I read back the information from the keynote that the old devices would get the update. Oh well, not like my old iPod touch needs the update now anyway considering my parents are using it solely for the music storage :p

.Neo
well does it have volume controls on the side? That doesn't automatically mean it's a third generation iPod touch. The second generation is visually identical. Is the iPod touch 3.1.3 8gb considered 3g? Read the first page... No, the 8GB model apparently isn't part of that. Only the 32 and 64GB models. vladmphoto
Wrong, you will. You'll just miss out on some of the main features, like multitasking. Just as johndotcom83 said. Wrong, you WON'T. If you read the information Apple posted on their site regarding iPhone OS 4 you will see this: iPhone OS 4 Compatibility iPhone OS 4 will work with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the second- and third-generation iPod touch this summer, and with iPad in the fall. Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 3GS and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009). So no, you cannot upgrade the 1st Gen. iPod Touch to OS 4.0. Do some research before you decide to give people false information.
andersonshatch
I'd like to know for my iPhone 3G. It could possibly be just Multitasking, i'm not too sure but I hope so. As long as I have all the features they showed and the backgrounds on the homescreen i'll be happy All of the beta's that have been released so far don't allow wallpaper on the 3G / touch 2nd gen for some stupid reason. It can be hack activated just like multitasking in the betas, but it seems likely they won't have home-screen wallpaper with the final release (without jailbreaking).
