Possible to install game without Steam?

Recommended Posts

So I downloaded Steam and subsequently installed games such as Supreme Commander 2 (sucks balls), and Battlefield 2: Bad Company. I have the keys for them but how do I get the media to install them without Steam?

Games that are associated with steam, as in download through steam or bought as Steam titles can't be used or installed without Steam running - However, I believe you can download EA titles like Bad Company 2 through the EA downloader; which is basically a

standard installer and doesn't require any software. All you need to do is use your Steam / Retail / whatever key through the EA downloader.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 can be downloaded with the EA Download Manager. I'm not exactly sure if that extends to other EA titles on Steam. As for games like Supreme Commander 2 and Left 4 Dead 2, you need Steam to download them.

You can use EA Downloader for some games, since EA are the publisher for alot of Valve's games and such (on consoles anyway). But I had it on my system for a whole 40 minutes, was a pile of junk.

You can run certain games that you bought and downloaded via Steam without having Steam running.

Locate your Steam folder, locate SteamApps, find the game and try run the executable. Some games it works some it doesn't

Installing is another matter.

You can also grab the CD key for non-valve games in Steam, then get a copy of the ISO and install it like you would a normal game, enter your legit serial from Steam and off you go.

Just curious, why don't you want to use Steam?

I just don't like the idea of having Steam take care of my games running and the ever-running process that is Steam. I rather just have my game installed and running by itself. Plus some people were complaining about the same problems I was experiencing with Battlefield Bad Company 2 and seemed to think it had to do with Steam. Turns out thats not the case but I don't Steam either way.

Thank you to everyone who suggested using EA Download Manager. It worked perfectly.
