Original x64 win7 explorer.exe

Recommended Posts

I was using a custom theme, and accidentally deleted/lost the original explorer.exe file.

Can someone upload it please? (I hope it's not against the law)

Thanks in advance.

open up task manager then do file / new task

Then browse to c:\windows\syswow64

then find explorer.exe right click it and choose copy then go to c:\windows and right click and paste.

then go back to file / new task and type explorer and press enter.

You should be good to go.

The copy of explorer.exe in C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ is 32-bit.

Windows Resource Protection should be covering explorer.exe

Try running

sfc /SCANFILE=c:\windows\explorer.exe

EDIT: verified that the above will work. I deleted the x64 version of notepad.exe and SFC successfully restored it.

Provided you have System Restore turned on, right-click on System32 and select Previous Version.

Browse to earlier date, before you deleted explorer.exe

I have the same issue, and how can I fix this in woindows 8.1

Same as in Windows 7:

  1. Boot into safe mode (hold shift when clicking restart on the login screen)
  2. Open a command prompt as administrator
  3. Enter the following command:
    sfc /scanfile=%windir%\explorer.exe

  4. Reboot the computer

I would think a System Restore would easily put back explorer.exe

For something as simple as recovering a system file, a restore would be the last recommended fix. There is no reason to jump right into a System Restore for a single file.

I would first try SFC and if that does not resolve it, depending on the OS, I would extract the needed file(s) from a service pack or in 8/10's case the MSU file.
