Does anyone know of a decent store online or physical that allows you to buy op amps, transistors, resistors, sensors etc. that won't force you to buy some highly specialized kit in Canada? If there's an actual store in Toronto that would be great. The Source doesn't seem to have much to offer.

it's a great site for discrete components, searching for parts is really easy too.

There's some stores at College/Spadina.

There is one store which I don't know the name of but they have tons of junk (including a lot of electronics parts) for real cheap if you need supplies for building various diy projects. They have a gorilla statue thing at the entrance. I'm sure other Torontonians on here will know it.

Definitely do not buy parts from The Source/Radioshack. They have like 20,000% markup.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I have recently been looking for a particular part and neither sayal or active have such a thing. I prefer to get it locally because it is cheaper and I really only need 1 of them. I am very new to electronics so if there is something you think sayal/active maybe offer that will work then by all means I would appreciate your advice.

What I'm looking for is a 1.8V regulator. I'm following a guide on making this circuit and they have listed the following product on digikey

I don't really want to buy from there because I only need 1 and shipping is ridiculous, I've already tried looking on ebay for this but no luck. Also, because of my lack in knowledge of electronics, I prefer to get a fixed regulator unless the variable is very easy to setup.

you don't need that part exactly. if you can find a voltage regulator that will accept your input voltage(lets say youre using 5 volts),and gives you 1.8v with a max of 200-250ma current, then it will work just as good. You can also get away with getting your voltage using diodes, depending on what the circuit is and how good your power supply is.

Toronto suppliers are crap I found. Overpriced as hell, bad selection, low stock. Vancouver is pretty damn good,very cheap and such a big selection. I usually prefer to order online, I buy big batches of voltage regulators,caps,diodes,resistors. when I start running low on a certain component,i just place another order,this way any project I work on, i'm sure to have all I need.

just checked sayal, all their voltage regulators are only available from their warehouse,and there is a minimum of $15 per order.

Thanks vcfan for trying to help. I understand that I don't necessarily need that particular item but I don't really know how to search for something similar on the sayal site, it's not very beginner friendly. Did you have an item in mind because I live relatively close to their stores and I could call to double check they carry it. I'm assuming its a variable regulator since I know they don't have any fixed for 1.8V, how do variable regulators work? Do they only work at 2 different voltages by grounding a certain pin? I've never worked with variable regulators work so that is why I preferred to get a fixed one.

I understand that ideally I should own many amounts of certain parts but as this is only my first project and I don't know if I will continue in the future, I will most likely only one off this for now hence why I can't buy in bulk.

one physical store with good prices and has so much electronic components it is not even funny. just boxes and boxes of anything you need.
