Groovedude Posted July 20, 2010 Share Posted July 20, 2010 Hi there Techy guys :).. got a little idea i want to implement into my current network setup in my house. i have a server box running win2008 r2. what i want to do is at a certain time on "one" day of the week, i would like a certain folder to be backed up to the server. how would i implement this? would it just be a case of map network drive of the machine i want to backup on the server? and use the standard backup tool that is in windows2008 ? -Opti Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Posted July 20, 2010 Share Posted July 20, 2010 When you create a backup job it actually creates a standard scheduled job which you can manually edit in Administrative Tools -> Task Scheduler. I don't mean to be intrusive but if data is important enough to be backed up and you have a machine worthy of being a Server, I would rather my data be there and access it via a mapped drive on the PC. If it is then I would store this data on the server and backup to your PC or some place else. Of course there are other factors that may invalidate this suggestion such as not having gigabit speeds. sc302 Veteran Posted July 20, 2010 Veteran Share Posted July 20, 2010 If it is a pc and not a laptop, redirect your files to my documents and point my docs to your user share which in most corporate scenerios get backed up once a day. For example, I have a daily backup that gets overwriten every other week, I have a monthly rotation that gets overwritten every 6 months, and I have a yearly rotation that gets overwritten yearly. If you don't catch your oops within 2 weeks time, shame on you, but I could go back to last month or the month before or 6 months ago or end of year. Most of the time it is within a day or two and I can restore it for the user. I have had to do this with files, database objects and mail objects. If you have a good backup solution and IT is on top of it, you won't have an issue when it comes down to getting your files. They may even have volume shadow copy enable to help with backup so that it is faster than going through the backup software. Many ways to do the same thing and cover your ass.
