As per the Zune Insider podcast (episode 84 at the 16 minute mark). United Airlines customers will be able to use zuneHD devices for in-flight entertainment that are preloaded with content. One of the things that they mentioned was that the zuneHD's will be loaded with movies that are no longer in theaters but not yet on DVD.

Bit small of a screen tbh, even for economy / coach.

Guess United is too poor to upgrade their planes lol

I always felt it was a great pocketable size [shrug] Anyway, the idea was to evolve the in-flight movie idea. It allows individual passengers to watch the movie of their choice instead of picking a random movie most don't want to watch. I thought it was a nifty idea at least.

They most likely decided to try this out on the zuneHD instead of a different device because of the previous zune in-flight music agreement... thing.

I can see it now. A month after they release the zunes they'll all be broken. Not a good idea. People don't know how to handle someone elses electronics.

Well most good airlines have interactive "tvs" on the back of the seats. You choose which movie / tv show to watch, or what music you want to listen to.

Sure that's still limited to what the plane has on board, but the same limitation applies to the Zune. The downside with the Zune is that people will break it, steal it, and the screen, while great, is a lot smaller than the ones on the back of seats.

Most 'long distance' planes already have this, but in the form of a seat back screen.
I guess this is cheaper to roll out, and if it's going to be on every flight, Excellent :D

I wonder how they will update the Zunes. Maybe all connected to one computer on the plane, with some custom software which syncs/updates them all.

Another great deal struck by MS if it works out and more airlines pickup the Zune service for inflight media. On that note, sure the HD has a smaller screen for vids BUT, maybe this will help push a bigger screened ZuneHD2 that is rumored to be coming next year. I think 4" would be good, some might like it bigger ofc.

Zunes sync wirelessly. Think out of the box ;)

That's cool, I hope MS can do more of these with other airlines so the chances of a ZuneHD2 go higher. Bigger screen Zune with more storage and a international release would be a dream come true for many people. Even though I'm thinking of getting a WP7 device soon if this does happen I'd get a ZuneHD2 as well.
