Apple's iPad is the hotcake of the 21st century

Recommended Posts

The iPad is set to become the fastest ever selling electronic device, according to estimates by US investment analysts.

Retail analysts at Bernstein Research have apparently declared that iPad sales' rates - 4.5 million units per quarter - have surpassed that of the DVD, previously the fastest adopted non-phone technology, according to CNBC.

It quotes Bernstein's retail analyst, Colin McGranahan, writing: ?The iPad did not seem destined to be a runaway product success straight out of the box... By any account, the iPad is a runaway success of unprecedented proportion."

If it was to continue this rate, apparently, the iPad would surpass gaming hardware and cellular phones to become the fourth biggest electronics category, after TVs, smart phones and notebook PCs.

The report is likely to restart the debate about whether or not the iPad is cannibalising notebook PC sales. McGranahan made his comments on a report about US mega retailer Best Buy, whose CEO was forced to clarify previous remarks about the iPad blasting notebooks out of the water.

Perhaps this is one reason to be a little bit cautious about how quickly the iPad will take over the entire world. We're talking about one segment of the US consumer market, which really consists of just one vendor.

It's also worth noting that DVDs came down in price reasonably rapidly - and Apple has never really embraced the pile em high, sell em cheap approach.

And, of course, the last thing Apple would want is for every every Tom, Dick or Harry to be walking around clutching its fondle slabs. And there were many vendors of the DVD format. There is, of course, only one vendor of the iPad, and its rivals are prepping their own tablets. Whether the world will take the new kids on the block to their hearts is another matter. ?

I'm really into Apple, but I did not see this coming, I am ver surprised. Overall I vote the iPad's usefulness rather low because it does not benefit me in any way.

As for this:

Anything is 'news' it might not be deemed newsworthy (yes I agree with you, but...) it is still news and information, and this is a tech forum.

Apparently they haven't encountered the idea of initial adoption rush

It's funny because people said the exact same thing first about the iPod and then about the iPhone.

Excuses so far:

- First the iPad would be a failure before it even hit the stores

- Then the iPad wouldn't sell beyond Apple enthusiasts

- After that the iPad wouldn't sell beyond gadget addicts in general

- When the iPad turned out to be selling quite well among the general public its success wouldn't last for more than a few months

- Now those few months have passed it's "initial adoption rush"?

Can't wait for the next one! (Y)

Apple has mastered the art of making people want things they don't really want or have any need for. Plenty of tablets have existed before, but it required a jolt from the Reality Distortion Field to make them popular.

I think of the iPad as a trend schmuck device.

This.

Funny thing is, I know a guy who has an iPod Touch, an iPhone 4, and bought an iPad.... Needless to say I couldn't help but laugh at him. Same thing for others. Why buy a device that does the same thing as your iPhone?

What I find annoying about the iPad, and other popular products, is this...

A few people told me they were getting the iPad. I asked why. The responses I got was "because it is cool" They couldnt tell me what it does or what it is used for. It just shows that people would rather buy something for status/popularity rather than think about if they need or...or if there is anything else out there that is around the same price but can do more or a better job. Same goes with cars, cameras, PCs, dish soap...whatever.

I have one, and around the house it became the most use "computer" for Web surfing, quick email, light gaming, music and video on car trips. And with 3G, Web surfing outside is possible and it's quite nice. I simply love the 9.7", much better Web experience than with my iPod. And all the Web site I do use don't require Flash, so it's not a problem for me.

I can also say that I read more books since owning my iPad.

I had one of those Netbook, upgraded it to the max and DARN it was slow at everything. Yeah, It ran a real OS, but I do much more now with my iPad. Instant ON is a killer feature.

It's a shame.

I bought an iPad after looking at the specs/design, and it fits my situation almost perfectly. Haven't used my netbook since.

I'm surprised that it sold so well, I wonder if the first adopters are actually buying more for family members. I've certainly considered it.

I've found that people with little computer experience, love it.

You could say that about most gadgets, why single out the iPad

Why do you feel that they should justify their purchases to you?

Yes, because that was the point of what I said.

And thats cool that you have a reason for what you buy and know what you are buying. These days tho a lot of people are just out for status and what is in. They have no idea what the product is all about.

No, thats just your own personal opinion projected onto those people, how do you judge they are just buying it for status or have no idea what the product is about, by the sounds of it, its you whos elitist.

How does it affect you that you would find it annoying? Don't get me wrong I fully agree, I have a friend like that too. But it doesn't affect me if he's wasting his money away.

Oh, my own personal opinion? Dude, RTF post before you post like fool. They told me they were getting an iPad AND I DIDNT MAKE A COMMENT. I asked why, they said it was cool So please tell me how that is projecting my opinion on to them when I said NOTHING about the product. They could tell me NOTHING about what they wanted to use the iPad for.

So read before you post, and stop telling me how I am or what I am doing. You are not a mind reader. You are the only one with a problem here so go troll someplace else. I find it "funny" that you are one of the people who claim I only post bad things about Apple but yet I post a good/positive article and you still have a problem with it.

Its annoying when friends and family do it since I am left supporting and showing them how to use the product.

The century is 1/10th over, and really don't think we have seen the "hotcakes" product yet. I can't just go out and get some, like i could hotcakes, they are much too expensive.

Dude...don't even bother with the apple zealots.

A colleague of mine is like that. He saw my kindle, and the first thing he asked was, why didnt I get an ipad. I explained that I prefer to have a dedicated gadget that excels at what it does. Explained how the e-ink is a better technology for reading, etc, etc.

I then asked him why he wants an ipad...he said it looks cool.

Did you even read the article? It specifically addressed "initial adoption".

The Apple iPad, a device made with plastics.

Actually, the shell of it is mostly glass and metal. Very little plastic at all in the iPad.
