It all depends whether you played it when it first came out or years later because your friends told you about it.

For me it was my first epic RPG and the shock of a main character dying during an entirely emotional and compelling storyline makes it my personal favourite.

However if you're coming to it late you're less likely to have appreciated the ground breaking aspects of the storyline.

It's like someone who played Half-Life for the first time today - they'd wonder what the fuss was about because all those original ideas have been copied by other games.

I voted no, but it probably IS my favourite game of all time.

I think alot of it has to do with your age when you play. I was only 12-13 playing Ocarina of Time and FF13 they were my first truely EPIC adventures and I think no matter what game I play no days no matter how good I won't remember it as fondly as games from that era as that was the time when things were still new and awesome to me.

Reading this thread reminds me I do gotta get round to playing through ff6 on my dingoo, have yet to have played it...

Not greatest of all time but it's up there in the top 20 I'd say. I actually liked FFX better [than FFVII], I know most people wouldn't agree, but this is a vote of opinion.. haha

My personal vote would be Zelda: Ocarina of Time

FF7? No i don't believe it's the best game of all time. That honor clearly goes to FFXIII.

 that's a good one....I enjoyed playing Mystic Quest a LOT more than XIII (well Mystic Quest wasn't that bad of a game)

I have to say that Final Fantasy 6 (3 in the U.S.) is the best in the series. However, as others have said, it's not the best game overall. That honor in my list goes to The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past. I must have beaten that game 30 times by now.

No. Its one of the greatest if not the greatest RPGs of all time but its definately not the best game of all time and thats coming from someone who REALLY loved FF7.

Agreed.

Why can't you just agree to disagree considering this is based purely on opinion.

I loved Final Fantasy 7, but I wouldn't put say it was the greatest game of all time, but someone else will disagree, I can't say they are wrong because everyone has different tastes.

+1

FF7 is a great game, one of the best but not the greatest of all time, for that you need to look at games which changed the landscape

Wolfenstein

Doom

Command and Conquer

Fallout / Fallout 2

Street Fighter

Mortal Kombat

Things like that, and of course I'm totally biased towards the fallout series (all before Tactics, but even that was ok to some extent)

I'd say that it was revolutionary, and that AT THE TIME it couldn't been dubbed the 'greatest of all time', but definitely not now. There's way better games out there.

i LOVE Final Fantasy 7

i even own 2 Aerith and 1 Sephiroth statues

but there's no way that FF7 is the greatest game of all time. one of the best RPGs ever? sure. but i really doubt it would be considered by many to be the single greatest game ever made.

At the time, I'd never played anything like FF7 and was completely blown away by it. It literally consumed months of my life. Even at work I'd be thinking about what I'd be doing next or how I'm going to equip my party for a particular challenge. Nothing before had had that kind of impact on me.

Definitely top 3 for me, but I wouldn't say it's the greatest ever. But I would say that Aeris's death was probably the greatest moment in any game I've played. Not in a morbid kind of way, but I still remember being completely stunned in that moment.
