How to set up Hotmail exchange server with mail for mac

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have successfully set up Hotmail using the exchange server settings on my iPhone.

When I try setting Hotmail up on my mac it automatically uses the pop3 settings, is there a way to manually enter the Hotmail exchange server settings into mail?

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

You can't and I REALLY hate that :( MS only enabled Exchange ActiveSync which isn't quite the same as the desktop version of Exchange and so far there's no mail client for OSX that support Exchange ActiveSync (technically no desktop client should, it's a mobile protocol)

Apparently, not even MS Outlook 2011 for Mac has any kind of Hotmail connector. You have to use POP. I don't use Hotmail, and I find it very odd that it doesn't support IMAP. POP is useless if you want to keep your iPhone and your desktop email client in-sync.... :(

www.gmail.com

Not an option for everyone.... I've been using my hotmail since 1997, there's no way I'm going to track down everyone that has my address to tell them I have a new gmail address

Thats why you forward your Hotmail addy to Gmail. Then you just notify the pople as they Email you.

And it also doesn't fix the problem - I used to access a gmail account through imap and found that when I deleted files it only used to tag them but never actually delete them off the server - in other words gmail have majorly stuffed up implementing imap. Think that is bad, check out the pop settings "When messages are accessed with POP" I select "delete gmails copy" and find that when accessing it via mail.app (where I setup 'delete off server after downloading') the server copy is deleted but nothing is download to my computer - a good number of emails suddenly vanish off the face of the earth. Use gmail and there is a whole new set of problems to deal with.

Try this: Link

It works pretty well for me allowing either OS X mail or Outlook to work much better with hotmail although it does cost $20.

bobbba, did you try the trial version first of Fluent Factory's "mBox Mail for Mac"? I downloaded and installed it right away. As soon as I tried to access the IMAP interface, my hotmail account received an e-mail saying the trial has expired. My e-mail to Fluent Factory asking what the deal was just went into some blackhole, i.e ignored.

If you did try the trial version, how long ago did you try that and what OSX version were you using?

If I can't even get the trial working, Fluent Factory cannot expect me to shell out $20 for it. It's also concerning that the program hasn't been updated in over a year, since "20-10-09".

Thanks.

This is why I use MobileMe. The integration is unparalleled. iCal works flawlessly. Mail works flawlessly. Address Book works flawlessly.

Saves me time on convenience alone, and since I bill $100/hour anyway, I see no reason to even think about it. If I save one hour because of zero-hassle setup and maintenance, MobileMe pays for itself.

I first started using it quite a while ago now so I can't remember if I did the trial or not. I was pretty relieved that I found a workable solution so if I did wait it wasn't long before I paid up.

Don't worry about the updates. It's a simple program so there's little if any reason to update it.

I think I was on OS X 10.5 when I first used it. I'm using 10.6 now.

One work around that I find works rather well is to create a gmail account and then use it just to import your email through POP. Set it up to function as an alias in the gmail settings and enable IMAP. Use hotmail as your sending server if you ever use the gmail to receive and send email. From Apple Mail set up the gmail account that matches your hotmail account and for the outgoing server set up hotmail not gmails for the new account you just set up.

All read messages get marked on the gmail account not the hotmail account but you can better keep things in sync. I use mail act-on and all mail that I move locally to my computer then get moved to the All mail folder keeping all my email on the gmail account from the stuff it imported from POP3 for the hotmail account.

A little complicated but not that bad to set up, will take about 20 minutes to an hour depending on your level of understanding of course.

As a side note you can import up to 5 POP3 accounts with a single gmail account. The only problem with this is although all the labels will show up in Apple Mail they won't auto reply with each hotmail account as you are checking them using Apple Mail's inbox and have to remember to switch what account you are sending from. You can set up quick key commands in System Preferences matching the labels of mail but not automatic for each account. http://macsparky.com/blog/2012/8/apple-mail-send-from-trick

Change the gmail settings under Forwarding and POP/IMAP to Immediately delete the message forever.

When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible IMAP folder:

Archive the message (default)

Move the message to the Trash

Immediately delete the message forever

This no doubt can get tricky between gmails settings and Apple Mail's, I feel your pain been there and messed things up many times!
