Windows 7 - No sound before sleep, sound AFTER wake

Recommended Posts

This has to be the oddest problem I have ever encountered.

My friend just bought a new Toshiba laptop, and we installed a fresh copy of Windows 7. All drivers installed and worked without a hitch, no problems except for the audio.

When we play a song, or any other form of audio, it's showing up as if it's playing without a problem, except there is no sound. We have tried both 64bit and 32bit installs of Windows 7, tried the driver that installs from Windows Update (generic), and the official driver from Toshiba's website. We have tried everything imaginable to get the sound to work.

Here's where it gets weird.

We fixed it, sort of. After putting the computer to sleep and then waking it back up, the sound magically works. Once the computer reboots, the sound doesn't work again, but after doing the sleep / wake cycle, we get the sound working again.

I am *very* curious as to why this is happening, and how to make the sound stay on through a reboot or shutdown.

Check the default sound device. Make sure you show hidden devices as well. Also, make sure it isn't a simply mute issue.

^ This, for some reason I have had to do that each time on my system as well, after a clean/reinstall the wrong "default" playback controls are selected.

If you're talking about these settings...

We've tinkered with those settings as much as possible, still no result.

The sleep / wake trick is the only thing that seems to be working.

Check what the event logs says? I would clear all the logs first. Reboot and replicate the issue.

I'll give that a shot, thanks.
