Buy Portal 2 PS3, get PC/Mac version free & Steam support

Recommended Posts

Marking the debut of Steam functioning on any next generation console, the features shipping in the PS3 version of Portal 2 include cross platform play (PC/Mac vs. PS3) for multiplayer games, persistent cloud-based storage of PS3 saved games, and cross platform chat (PC/Mac and PS3).

In addition, those who purchase Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 may unlock a Steam Play (PC & Mac) copy of Portal 2 at no additional cost by linking their PSN and Steam accounts.

"We made a promise to gamers at E3 that Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 would be the best console version of the product," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "Working together with Sony we have identified a set of features we believe are very compelling to gamers. We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases."

"We designed the Portal 2 PS3 experience to be very straightforward for gamers," said Josh Weier, project lead on Portal 2 at Valve. "PS3 gamers will be able to simply drop the Blu-Ray disc in the PS3, link to their Steam account from inside the game, and all their Steam friends (on PC and Mac) will be visible and accessible for chat and game invites."

Valve has announced that the PlayStation 3 version of Portal 2 will feature Steam functionality. This is the first time Steam has ever appeared on a console, and this will also be the first time that PlayStation 3 gamers will be able to play with PC or Mac gamers. Along with cross-platform multiplayer, we can expect persistent cloud-based storage for PS3 save games and cross-platform chat. (To clarify, "cross-platform" in this context means PS3-PC/Mac, not PS3-360.)

On top of that, anyone who buys Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 will be able to unlock a Steam Play copy of Portal 2for the PC and Mac for free by linking their PSN and Steam accounts. Portal 2 project lead Josh Weier explains that Valve has designed the cross-platform experience to be hassle-free: "PS3 gamers will be able to simply drop the Blu-ray disc in the PS3, link to their Steam account from inside the game, and all their Steam friends (on PC and Mac) will be visible and accessible for chat and game invites."

Back at E3 2010, Gabe Newell promised that the PlayStation 3 version would be the best console version, and now we know what exactly he meant. Newell went on to say, along with today's announcement, that Valve hopes "to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases."

Doug Lombardi, Valve's VP of marketing, praised Sony's openness to the idea of Steam on PS3. "Sony just seems really open to the idea," he told us last week. "People at [publisher] EA introduced us to some people at Sony and we were like, 'It would be really cool if we could do something with Steam and they were like, 'Do it!'

"Just working with them in general has been very easy going. I think they see having an open platform console as a strategic advantage for them, and so they're running with it."

"I think Sony's allowing developers and publishers more freedom now, so hopefully we'll see this idea of an openness to allow applications and games across platforms start to proliferate a little bit more. Or it may just go on to be one of those things that only Valve does!"

So if I buy Portal 2 on the PC will it unlock for the PS3 as well? Or only the other way?

Edit* Who voted the thread 1 star - it's fantastic news!

From the looks of it it's just buy the PS3 version get PC/MAC for free.

Find a friend with a PS3 and split the costs - Although you'd have to be willing to have his PS3 account tied to your steam account. I don't know what repercussions that may have if you get a PS3 at some point or valve increase PS3 steam support and your friend wants to take advantage of other titles.

I had a feeling this would happen when they started to push SteamPlay for PC/Mac. Valve have always been very generous when it comes to their games. You always get value for money with their games... when they can be bothered to release them.

Hopefully the sales from Portal 2 for Sony and Valve will show Microsoft that having a locked down network isn't always an advantage. I hope one day that SteamWorks is on all the consoles.

I am sure Sony slid some Ben Franklin's there way, which is a good thing :)

Paying them for what exactly? They probably wouldn't even be developing for the PS3 right now had MS allowed them to do this stuff on the 360.

You should maybe read this article I posted on the last page before making stupid comments - http://www.next-gen.biz/news/valve%E2%80%99s-lombardi-ps3-steam-support

To support the PS3. It's called money hatting. Oh, and stop calling people's comments stupid, ok?

Your comment is stupid as Doug Lombardi explained why they are working on the PS3.

But let's get this straight anyway, when Valve despised the PS3 they were telling the truth about it and it's development, but when they praise the PS3 and decide to work with it it's money hatting?
