"We made a promise to gamers at E3 that Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 would be the best console version of the product," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "Working together with Sony we have identified a set of features we believe are very compelling to gamers. We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases." "We designed the Portal 2 PS3 experience to be very straightforward for gamers," said Josh Weier, project lead on Portal 2 at Valve. "PS3 gamers will be able to simply drop the Blu-Ray disc in the PS3, link to their Steam account from inside the game, and all their Steam friends (on PC and Mac) will be visible and accessible for chat and game invites." Valve has announced that the PlayStation 3 version of Portal 2 will feature Steam functionality. This is the first time Steam has ever appeared on a console, and this will also be the first time that PlayStation 3 gamers will be able to play with PC or Mac gamers. Along with cross-platform multiplayer, we can expect persistent cloud-based storage for PS3 save games and cross-platform chat. Edit* Who voted the thread 1 star - it's fantastic news! From the looks of it it's just buy the PS3 version get PC/MAC for free. Find a friend with a PS3 and split the costs - Although you'd have to be willing to have his PS3 account tied to your steam account. I don't know what repercussions that may have if you get a PS3 at some point or valve increase PS3 steam support and your friend wants to take advantage of other titles. Valve have always been very generous when it comes to their games. You always get value for money with their games... when they can be bothered to release them. Hopefully the sales from Portal 2 for Sony and Valve will show Microsoft that having a locked down network isn't always an advantage. I hope one day that SteamWorks is on all the consoles. They probably wouldn't even be developing for the PS3 right now had MS allowed them to do this stuff on the 360.
