Netflix for Android... Sigh...

Recommended Posts

Am I the only one who REALLY wants a Netflix app for Android? Even if it is limited to the high end devices, that's fine by me :D. That's the one thing that's stopping me from jumping ship to the Android side.

Any news on this front?

I'd guess that it will get launched when the Honecomb (Android 3.0) tablets get released. Netflix on a 4.3" screen to me isn't worth it. I resort to watching movies on my 14" laptop if nothing else is available.

Well can't comment on the dates or when it will be available but Netflix has been switching their service to HTML5 for devices.. this is what allows them to run Netflix on PS3 as well as other devices.

So it's really a matter of agreements than a technical challenge.

If i recall Netflix said they would only put an app on select android devices as the platform is not secure enough. I would LOVE to have an app, though.

I travel a lot and I really enjoy having it on my little 4" Focus. Quite convenient for me. I really hope they release a client for 2.2 or 2.3, because that'd be awesome :D

I've wanted it fir a while now. But according to netflix its a no go due to androids open system and drm issues.

But, they did say they were working with hardware manufacturers to create something on a hardware level and we should see it soon. On Mobile now but will track down source later (but as I said was directly from netflix)

It'd be cool with Wi-Fi, but you know the wireless carriers won't be happy with Netflix' data usage through 3G/4G... which is why they have caps in place and will soft-cap those unlimited ones in the near future, if not already.

I think it's kind of lame from Netflix.. they can very well use Flash and just be done with it.. 10.2 supports StageVideo fully GPU accelerated video, it supports copyright protection and it works on all Android handsets with Android 2.1 and above which is like 90% now.

It's a shame they didn't figure out their own DRM protection and apply it to all platforms instead of relying on individual platform's copy protection.
