Hey guys and gals,

Got my Inspire 4G today and I gotta say it is AWESOME! Screen quality is superb and 2.2 is so much better than I remember.

Got a few questions though.

Task manager?
Best keyboard?
Also, best video player for watching videos and movies?
Any pro tips for a newbie Android user?

Thanks in advance and yay for Android.

Congrats! With my Desire I began with using Advanced Task Killer and I constantly closed apps, seeing that it was using up memory- that is quite unnecessary as Android does a great job of managing application memory. You might find a rogue app that doesn't comply but that's rare. I would suggest you not use a task manager. The HTC keyboards are great- Swype is a good alternative that I use full-time (youtube that if you've never heard of it). Use Rock Player to watch .avi, mp4s... pretty much anything you throw at it.

If you get tired of Sense, use Launcher Pro / ADW EX for a different feel!

Had one in my hand before release on friday but then didn't get it yet. Still worried about battery life so once you've done some days with it, mind posting back :D I know new phone, new android user so it wont be "normal" usage for a while but i'm just curious still. :)

Definitely. I'll try to put up a review at some point.

@ gazebee - thanks for the tips! I've seen ADW, but the main reason I picked this over the Matrix or Infuse was Sense hehe.

One sad note though, I can reproduce the antennagate issue on this phone with the WiFi. Cup my hand or grip the phone at the top (like in landscape), my signal drops from 3 wavy lines to 2, even standing right in front of the router. Not a big deal, but funny that its not just the iPhone that has this problem.

Side note: Android is amazing. Been editing Java code on my school's server for the last 20 minutes. Awesome! ConnectBot is an awesome app.

would you rather go back in time 7-10 years and have retractable antenna sticking out of it?

congrats on the purchase though! looks like a sweet phone!

Not only yes, but **** yes. Bunny ears on my cellphone. Awesome. I was mainly just commenting on it isn't just an iPhone issue like some people seem to think.

task manager is built into Android at this point.

also Vplayer is the best video player I know of and I use Music Mod as my music player.

Also as far as battery life goes the best method to make sure you get Excellent battery life is simply to turn off bluetooth if you are not using AND turn the brightness down on the screen. I have noticed that my OG Droid battery life is about 30% greater by only doing these two things.

Congratulations, I hope you enjoy your purchase

As for task managers. You usually shouldn't need them, but I personally use a program called "Android System Info"... it can also tell you how much free memory you actually have.

Keyboard... well this is just a personal thing but I don't actually like the swipe input keyboards, I find them too fiddly. I like the stock HTC keyboard, but the multitouch keyboard that comes with Android 2.3 is also pretty good (may have to have your phone rooted to install it though).

Video... well I can say the default HTC gallery app does the job well enough.

1. no task manager needed, especially on something like the inspire, it has 768MB of ram!
2. I'm actually a fan of the stock gingerbread keyboard on my 3.7" Nexus One, I Would assume its even better on a 4.3" screen. Swiftkey is the most talked about by others tho it seems. Edit: you can find the gingerbread keyboard on the market!
3. rockplayer is the best, plays everything I throw at it.
4. take a look at each category of apps, look at the top rated ones and see if theres anything that would be useful to you!

I've been a fan of stock Android for a while (hence the Nexus One). Had Android 2.1 originally, updated to 2.2 when it came official. Still no official 2.3 update but I have tried some AOSP 2.3 roms.
But just last week I loaded the ported Desire HD (Inspire 4G, same phone) rom onto my Nexus and thus far love the new Sense! From everything I've seen I'd call it the best skinned version of Android yet! I actually prefer it to stock Android thus far.

A friend of mine has a Samsung Galaxy S, I can't stand the iPhone rip off UI. It's pretty poor, his phone seems slower then mine despite what is suppose to be a better processor and a way better graphics chip.

Picked up an Inspire this morning for my dad, thing is really nice. Everything seems on par with my Evo, although I prefer the Inspire's housing a lot more. Loving the new Sense 2.0...

The use of the term 4G is a bit of a misuse in terms really, it's more in the lower realms of HSPA+ the 14/7mbps standard (can't recall the exact numbers off the top of my head) however it's performance on cellular data networks is indeed an improvement over the desire and other HSDPA devices.

Also... I haven't noticed an issue with my cellular signal dropping, but I have noticed that holding the phone in certain ways can also cause the wifi signal to drop. I don't think the issue is quite as pronounced as it was on the iPhone 4, but it's still a bit of an annoyance, and something HTC should have learnt from, however for me it's not a deal breaking issue.
