My friend has an Acer laptop. I copied some movies onto my USB flash drive and when I played them on my PC at
home, all the files were corrupted. I had them copy some video files onto their flash drive at test them on their
desktop and they get the same problem.

So you actually checked the checksum of the files - and its different on the flash media?

I haven't checked the hashes. I don't see how the files on the flash drive would not differ. The videos are obviously corrupted. Sometimes media players can't render them at all. The files are perfect when played on the laptop, over their network on their desktop, after being copied over the network to the desktop, etc. We've tried two flash drives, which both work perfectly when copying videos from other machines. The problem only occurs when copying files from that laptop onto a USB drive.

Seems nobody has found a cause or solution yet.

What exactly does videos become corrupted actually mean?

Same problem as what?? What happens? Do you get an error in your video player? Is the video all pix-elated? What exactly?

it would take you 2 seconds to compare the hashes which gives you details of problem in file transfer, etc.

Could be a problem in reading from the drive that has nothing to do with the file being corrupted -- which is why do a simple 2 second hash check!

The video either looks jittery or scrambled and blocky. Skips frames. Sometimes the video won't load at all. WMP, for example will say it can't render the file.

The laptop is the culprit. Writing the video files results in corrupt videos. They haven't had problems copying videos TO the laptop from USB. The files will not play on either their desktop nor mine, whether played off the USB drive or copied first.

Their desktop also has Win7 x64 and does not have this problem.

I don't see them very often, so I won't be able to do a hash check for a while. They aren't computer literate enough to do it themselves.


EDIT: others have suggested it may be a codec problem. But I am positive it is not, as the videos do not work on my system. I know my codecs are all updated and working.

Also, this problem happens with DVD movie folders and ISOs.

Is the BIOS up to date ?

Have you looked for newer chipset drivers at Acer ?

At least reinstall current chipset drivers, if there are none newer.

That may fix the USB transfers.

I would download and install VLC player, as a test.

That might tell you if it is a codec problem.

Even though the flash drive works fine on other computers, it still could be flakey. I've had one that worked fine on all of my older computers, but wouldn't work at all (it wasn't even recognized as a drive) on my newest desktop. I finally gave up on it and threw it away (it was only an old 512MB drive I was using for backing up my Quicken files).

I have to respond to this as my Acer 5552 is now doing this exact same thing. I use an external HDD to archive movies, pictures, documents. When i use any USB on the laptop to transfer over files they are corrupt. But if i transfer them the SD card using the card reader it works fine. This same HDD works on all my other computers, my PS3, friends and work computers, only on my Laptop do files get corrupted in transfer. I have VLC player and the videos do as the OP described when i transfer them to any USB device. The movies are a jumbled, skipping, pixelated mess. But play perfectley on my laptop.

I've tried many different USB thunb drives, my USB external HDD ALL devices work on other machines, but not on my laptop. It's only 3 months old.

And again I have to ask -- what is the hash compare of the files.. Just because they do not play on your laptop does not actually mean the files are corrupted.

Have you tried burning it to DVD or stream it over the network? The choppy picture sounds like it is buffering or that you copied a copyright-protected video (it will do that because copying is unauthorised according to the copyright holder of that video

Did you use Safety Remove when you unplugged the USB device? If not, that can cause corruption of the files.

Could be a fake USB drive. Seen a few before.

I'm having the same issue. I have a dell desktop and I copied various avi files to a new usb drive from circa 2007 and the videos play back choppy. I copy it back to the desktop and that video also plays choppy but the original one is fine.
The files have the same size, but I'm sure the checksums are different, but I haven't checked.

I thought my issue is with the fact the IDE i just bought from amazon is 150GB and there is an issue if you go over 130GB.
This is probably not related, but I bought a drive enclosure that has USB On-the-go functionality that only works with IDE drives.
I think the circuit can't handle more than 130GB, but I could be wrong.. It's just a theory, but it seems others have this issue
with AVI files.

I copied a picture (png, jpg) file and it looks fine most of the time.. one I saw color bands on one set.. i'm sure it's related.

Just gonna sum up what others have said here and add a few notes.

You should check the hashes. If they're different, then something went wrong when writing the files. This could be caused by anything from bad chipset drivers, bad RAM, a failing HDD, the USB stick itself might be bad, and although unlikely, it could even be a malfunctioning power supply.

If they're the same, then something is going wrong when reading the files, meaning the USB drive is probably bad.

^ Well said!! Provide the hashes and then we will know if file is same or corrupted.. Takes 2 seconds
