Settlement in George Hotz Case

Ability to run your own code, IE homebrew.

You could run your own code in Linux for years, never really took off that much. Then that was removed considering the approach that was finally taken by the homebrew community, torch Sony's security. If all everyone apparently wanted to do was "run their own code" why wasn't being able to operate in Linux enough? Why go for Sony's jugular, aka the hypervisor?

You cannot expect to run your own code under Sony's OS, that is an unrealistic expectation. If you want to do something like that you'll need to become an official developer and gain access to a PS3 SDK.

You can bet that Sony won't have OtherOS in the PS4. Very sad.

Yea. The sad thing is that we had that ability with OtherOS. The PS3 was the most open platform. It wasn't until the hacking community started ****ing with OtherOS to load unsigned code on the XMB that Sony took it away. So you guys had that ability to load your own code before... why go further?

Edit: AB beat me to it

GeoHotz's supporters need to cut the crap.

Look, console manufacturers aren't stupid.

They know that if they allow people to run custom code, probably 95% of the people are ACTUALLY going to use it to pirate games. Go on any PS3 or PSP hacking forum and count the number of posts about running legitimate homebrew and the number of posts about playing pirated games/emulators.

Maybe it's not fair to punish the 5% of people that actually want to run legitimate homebrew, but it is stupid to ignore that the vast majority of the time, "homebrew" is just code for "pirated games."

Sony tried an experiment by giving consumers one of the most open console in history and hackers had to go and ruin it by permitting piracy and cheating. In fact, Sony has long been a friend of Linux. Anyone remember the PS2 Linux machine? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_for_PlayStation_2

It is ironic that people are claiming that Sony is evil and oppressive when Sony actually has been pushing Linux for a while. The problem is people take advantage of Sony's willingness to have a more open console by using OtherOS to hack the PS3 firmware to enable emulators and piracy.

At this point, it's just not worth it to Sony to have Linux. Why give people Linux if the the vast majority of people are just going to use it to steal games?

I don't see how it's an unrealistic expectation. If people are able to compile and make their own code without the SDK, why should they pay Sony for it when they don't need it?

See the post above yours.

Your expectations are completely out of order for that of a games console, I have no idea where down the line of the console gaming history you've led to believe such inane expectations are ever going to be met. Are you really sitting their saying people should have full access to the whole PS3, without the need for an SDK? Without the need for certification? Without the need for approval? Without the need for licenses?

An environment where unsigned code can be ran within the Sony OS is one of anarchy, chaos and downright nonsensical for 95% of online gamers out there not interested in piracy, cheating, spoofing and all the other crap that comes from "homebrew".

The environment needs to be protected, you know that, so I have no idea where your expectations actually meet reality.

Then buyer a dev kit console. Don't expect to buy a product designed for the end-user to run SDK.

If Sony let all PS3s run SDK, then they might as well stop making consoles because the vast majority of people are only interested in pirating games.

Sony is not stupid and neither are we. Stop talking like as if hackers are knights in shining armor looking to free us from Sony's evil bonds.

The vast majority of people that jailbreak do it to player emulators and pirate games.
