Ok neowin members,

need your help im getting myself a iPhone 3Gs but i need a case, i currently use a TUF-LUV branded one on my htc hero, there are two cases that have caught me eye already.

one from tuf-luv (the one thing that lets it down is the picture on the front :( )

second is made by griffin (can't find many pics of it though)

Anything made by Switcheasy:

I have personally had the Capsule Neo and Torrent, they have both been great:

If you were after a rubber case my girlfriend has had the "COLORS" which is also good:

Edit: I just read your post in more detail and noticed you don't like plastic cases but all the same have a look and see if there is something you fancy. All the cases come with screen protectors and dock adapters so pretty good value for money in my experience :)

my concern with the plastic cases is, are they actually protecting, or just comestic?

All of those cases offer great protection. I can't count how many times of dropped my iPhone and it's survived - it's been in a case all it's life and when I do remove it on the odd occasion there isn't a scratch on it - it could pass as new from the factory. Both of those cases have a lip around the front which prevent the edges of the screen hitting the ground. Honestly my phones gone through the abuse of some very drunk nights out being kicked around the floor on the odd occasion, and whilst the case ended up pretty battered, the phone was still pristine. The screen protectors are pretty great too.

I have the incase Slider case and love it:

Be careful with the slider cases, my friend had a Griffin one and a bit of grit got in somehow, so whilst sliding it out/in there was nice deep scratch on the back of his phone. Just make sure it's dead clean before removing and replacing it.

The other thing to mention about the switcheasy is the complete protection. The buttons also get covered up and you get given a dock protector and a headphone jack protector so literally the smallest amount of the phone is exposed (except the screen of course.

Yup, my slider case has scratched my handset to hell, and the bezel is horrible looking now too. I don't recommend these cases at all.

I do have the Elan Passport, and it's good, but bulky and adds a lot of thickness to the phone. Looking at those that SwitchEasy provide, the NUDE looks like a great case, and I may get one myself.

thanks Axel.. i very much like the look of neo, did you purchase direct?

You're welcome :) I didn't buy direct, I think I purchased it from Play.com but they might not do it anymore. If you do a google shopping search you may be able to find a decent price!

The neo was great. It comes with a "rubber condom" thing which sits over the phone, then there's a hard shell bit which snaps on and another plastic shell which snaps onto that. The only downside to this is taking the phone in and out of the case can be a bit of a pain!

Another thing to note before you purchase is that you can find a lot of video reviews of these cases on youtube so you get a better idea on what to expect, as opposed to all those product "glamour shots".

I've used the Incase Slider on both my old 3GS and iPhone 4 and really like it. As you've mentioned, I did have that happen to my 3GS... some grit or whatever got in the back of the case and when I went to take it off to clean the phone, it left a couple nice long scratches on the back (going through the Apple logo to boot). Kinda disappointing, but it's bound to happen with that type of case.

I use the Nude as suggested above. It's a very good and small case protecting the iPhone in a good way. I've dropped my phone about 5 times now and only a crack in the case - not in the iPhone - shows the heavy use. The phone itself still looks like new.
