A short spat with Phoenix Technologies a while back left Phoenix with no official name due to legal issues, however, quite recently, a new name was announced; Firebird.

This development have placed the Phoenix project in the crosshairs of an open source project which develops a server database called Firebird. No legal issues are present, Mozilla's Firebird browser has every right to lay claim to a name which has permiated culture and society for hundreds of years. Unfortunately, the Firebird database supporters seem to object strongly to Phoenix browser changing its name to Firebird. While both groups claim that they will take a calm and civil stance on this issue, there has been an explosion of trolling on Mozillazine.org's new Firebird support forums. These so called upholders of moral principles, in their zeal to show loyalty to the Firebird Database, have resorted to pasting the forums with links to their own project, claiming that they are new versions of the Firebird browser.

The FirebirdSQL people just want publicity. I had NEVER heard of this database before this...

Honestly, I hope they choose another name, since I don't really think Firebird is a good name for a browsing software, I wouldn't mind it if it was for a peice of hardware. And that logo i think suits better for an desktop icon of game or a logo for a game production company. Either I don't think they should try to fight back the name from them though. just my thoughts

I think you missed the part where this article was a personal take of recent events. It was in my eyes not intended as a unbiased review of facts. The article writer makes this clear by saying "me, I, and I believe"

You forgot the most important factor in the whole argument here Comparatively, Firebird browser and Firebird database are as different as an apple and a pineapple. The Phoenix team has my vote. Again there is no question of Trademarks (so legally they still haven't done anything wrong) and as for bullying (your quote) I find it rather depressing that Phoenix team whose software's roots are in Netscape did to fellow open source developers exactly what Microsoft did to Netscape - bullied them. Again errrrr, Internet Explorer and Netscape were 2 competing BROWSERS how is the phoenix team bullying Firebird SQL from market share LOL. It sounds like the friendly Open Source business decided to use the popular status of Phoenix to elevate their grossly unknown Firebird SQL DB. I had never heard of them before this and still don't consider them for use on my PC.
