Microsoft is preparing to release a public preview of Windows Media Player 10 beta today. The update (due at 12noon EST) will sport the much talked about new GUI and enhancements for portable media players. WMP10 is due to be released later this year and will be included with Windows Media Center 2005.

Testers of Windows Media Center 2005 were treated to an early alpha copy of WMP10 for compatability reasons in the first round beta. Beta 2 of MCE 2005 is set to include the updated WMP10. MCE 2005 Beta 2 is due within 2 weeks.

We'll update the post when the download link appears this afternoon.

Update: WMP10 Beta has now officially been released.

Anyone noticed a big bug already? When I minimize to the taskbar, the Play, Stop etc. controls are greyed out

Reboot after you install it and fiddle with the taskbar options. I had that problem and resolved it that way.

I guess that's the toolbar mode you're running and then you close it and it carries on playing. I'd reboot your machine and see if it's working again, if not then re-install should help.

WMP10 is just building on what WMP9 is and adding in all the little things that people have requested. Biggest part of WMP10 is the mobile devices support

Yeah WMP9 was hardly excellent for PocketPC stuff.

Try re installing and restarting. Also disable the taskbar and then un install and keep it disabled till you have installed WMP10 again.
